2015 Fantasy Football: Week 8 Buy/Sell
BUY – Stefon Diggs – WR – Minnesota Vikings
Diggs was featured in last week’s buy/sell, but there just needs to be more talk about what this guy is capable of doing based on what he has done thus far. Diggs turned in another spectacular game on Sunday against the Lions with six catches for 108 yards and a touchdown. I was eager to see how Diggs would perform with Charles Johnson back from his injury, but Diggs was just as spectacular as he had been in the previous two games. Not only has Diggs shown that he can be relied on as a WR2 or FLEX option moving forward, but he has shown that he might already be the best receiver and playmaker on the Vikings roster, including Adrian Peterson. He has 19 catches for 324 yards in his three games this season, tallying 14, 19 and 22 points in PPR leagues, respectively. Great things happen when the ball is in his hands and he should be owned in 100% of leagues. He is still only 59.4% owned in ESPN leagues, so go out and grab him now if you can.
BUY – David Cobb – RB – Tennessee Titans
This may need to be the feature of a waiver wire column, but I have David Cobb listed as a buy candidate because of what I believe he will do for the Titans running game when he returns. The Titans are currently 20th in the NFL in rushing yards per game, but they have yet to find their guy to emerge as the lead back. Dexter McCluster, Bishop Sankey, Antonio Andrews, and Terrance West have all received carries in the backfield for the Titans this season, and only one of them have a run longer than 17 yards on the year (McCluster – 44). I am, by no means, guaranteeing that Cobb is going to come back from his injury and emerge as a dominant fantasy running back, but the Titans need help. They spent a third round draft pick on Cobb in the 2015 draft, and with the team struggling on offense seemingly more and more each week, they need to figure out the answer in the backfield to help out rookie QB Marcus Mariota. This is likely a move of desperation in deeper leagues, but you never know what might happen.
SELL – Jordan Matthews – WR – Philadelphia Eagles
J-Matt started the season off strong in Philly, totaling 22 catches for 231 yards and a touchdown in the first three games, but has just 17 catches for 167 yards and zero scores in the last four games. The Eagles have been more than disappointing on offense this season, and Matthews has been a victim of that of late. The bye week is coming at a great time for Philly, so maybe the kinks that need to be worked out will be resolved and help Matthews return to his WR1/WR2 status. Matthews is still the primary target for the Eagles and has the ability to bounce back, but it might not be this season if the Eagles can’t get their offensive woes straightened out soon.
BUY – Derek Carr – QB – Oakland Raiders
While Carr has been inconsistent this season, he has shown that he has the ability to perform as a valuable backup quarterback option. He has 11 touchdowns in six games and is averaging just over 243 yards per game this season, which is weighed down because of just 61 passing yards in the first game of the season against the Browns. Carr will likely struggle this week against the Jets, but he has the chance to put up big numbers any given Sunday, especially as his chemistry with Amari Cooper continues to grow. After their week eight matchup against the Jets, Carr and the Raiders will take on the Steelers, Vikings, Lions, Titans and Chiefs before traveling to Denver in week 13. The Raiders are 3-3 on this young season, and I bet you could guess the three games the Raiders won against the games they lost based on Carr’s statistics. Good, consistent QB play has been fairly tough to come by this year, so having Carr as an option when QB1 faces a tough team or is on BYE is a great move.
SELL – Mike Evans – WR – Tampa Bay Buccaneers
I have not been afraid of putting high priced names on this buy/sell list that some people may not approve of. Mike Evans had his breakout game in 2015 and finally caught his first touchdown, however, he has been held back because of a rookie QB who is still learning more and more each week. Not to mention, Evans has the lowest caught ball percentage in the NFL this season, as he is hauling in just 40% of the passes thrown his way. Evans missed week one against the Titans and did not record a catch in week two against the Saints, but broke out with seven catches for 101 yards against the Texans in week three. He had just six catches for 73 yards combined in weeks four and five against the Panthers and Jaguars, and has yet to be able to put together the kind of season that Evans owners hoped for after taking him so high in the draft. I believe the time is now to sell Evans, after recording eight catches for 164 yards and a touchdown against the Redskins, simply because he has a rookie throwing him the football.
