Fantasy Football: Build Your Own Favorite Team
This article is pretty simple. I will simply be building a team of my favorite players. You don’t have to be an expert of any sort to participate in this article, you just have to love the game. I will build my team, then we would love for you guys to build your own team in our Fantasy Fix NFL Forums. The link to the where you can build your team is right here (BUILD YOUR TEAM HERE) and we even gave you a list of position abbreviations that you can copy to make it easier. Feel free to add or take away any position as well. Perhaps you want all players from your favorite team or maybe you like old timers. We want to see who our valued readers are a fan of. These players don’t have to be great, just guys you’re a fan of. Have fun with this and enjoy. Simply put the players name and even make mention of why you like them if you want. This is my team of all-time favorites …
Offense
QB Michael Vick
I’m going with Vick here. Cam Newton was certainly in the conversation, but I’m all in on the Mike Vick experience. I still where his shoes to this day. I also appreciate how he really turned his life and image around. Nothing like a guy that learns from his mistakes and makes the most of a second chance. His electrifying play doesn’t hurt either.
RB1 Ricky Williams
Run Ricky Run! Williams is my all-time favorite back and the greatest back to ever suit up for my Miami Dolphins. Yes, I was heart broken as a young teen when he up and retired, but I get it. He has a life outside of football, and what he did on the field was incredible. He’s arguably the most gifted back of my lifetime.
RB2 Marshawn Lynch
I know it sounds bad, but O.J. Simpson was in the conversation as well, but I decided to only go with players that have actually played during my lifetime, or at least since I’ve startedwatching football, which was around 1990 or so. Beast Mode is a character and has made some of the greatest runs I’ve ever seen. Stealing the injury cart at Cal may have put him over the top. I want an honorable mention for Clinton Portis and Ronnie Brown as well. I wish I could add four RBs or more.
WR1 Michael Irvin
How do you not love the Playmaker? Along with the Phins, I am also a Miami Hurricane fan. Irvin is an all-time great and second to only Jerry Rice in my life time, at least among players whose careers have concluded. I’ll take him over Randy Moss, Marvin Harrison and Tim Brown every time.
WR2 Antwan Randle El
Randle El is an all-time favorite. I’ve always been a huge fan of him since his days in Pittsburgh and he was my return man in in Madden. I’ll never forget his touchdown pass in the Super Bowl. I’ve actually had a few conversations with him and he couldn’t be a better guy. I once threatened to beat him in Madden with him. Back when Mike Vick was on the cover.
WR3 Chris Chambers
As I mentioned earlier, I’m a Dolphins fan, and I always felt Chambers was extremely underrated. He was a solid WR1 on a team with absolutely horrendous quarterbacks. When he was drafted, he actually had the highest vertical leap in the NFL and once had a 200 yard game. Here’s a fun fact, my first email account was chambermusic84, a play on Chambers and my favorite musical group, the Wu-Tang Clan. I fully expect and hope for Jarvis Landry to supplant him on this list one day.
TE Charles Clay
I was particularly fond of Clay. I was very sad to see him go, but who can blame him with the deal the Bills offered him. He got borderline Gronk money. I even started the hashtag #Gay4Clay. With that said, within a year or two, Clive Walford could take over this spot.
Defense
DE Dwayne “The Rock Johnson”
I’m breaking this down to four defensive lineman and I’m starting with “The Rock”. Yes, this may deserve a bit of an asterisk because he never played in the NFL, nevertheless, he was a starting defensive end on a Miami Hurricane’s National Championship team. Plus with the exception of anything that has anything to do with the nightmarishly bad Fast and the Furious franchise, how do you not love The Rock. Everything from his days as “The People’s Champion” to Tooth Fairy, I’m on board with Dwayne Johnson.
DE Adewale Ogunleye
Ogunleye was a highly productive end opposite Jason Taylor in Miami. While Taylor was the Hall of Famer, I always took had a soft spot for the Nigerian Prince. Yes, he’s literally a prince. He was a playmaker and quite frankly, much more likeable than Taylor. Julius Peppers just barely missed the cut.
DT Warren Sapp
Sapp hasn’t exactly had a great past few year, but he was the best defensive tackle of my lifetime and possibly anybody’s life time. He really revolutionized the position. The teammate of Dwayne Johnson has both a National Championship and Super Bowl on his resume.
DT Vince Wilfork
Wilfork is a man mountain. He was the centerpiece of the Patriots’ defense for over a decade and is another future Hall of Famer out of Miami. He’s one of the greatest tackles to ever step on the field and deserves even more recognition than he already gets. While he’s not the stat stuffing pass rusher of many big name DT’s, his value to a team is immeasurable and you can build a defense around him.
LB Ray Lewis
Lewis is the greatest middle linebacker to ever step on the field. And of course he’s a product of the real Linebacker U, the Hurricanes. I don’t want to hear that Penn State nonsense. Come on now, Jon Beason, Jon Vilma, D.J. Williams, Denzel Perryman, Michael Barrow, Sean Spence, Jessie Armstead, Dan Morgan, Rocky McIntosh, Nate Webster and many more. That’s just since the mid-90s. Still Lewis is the greatest of them all. He rode off into the sunset with a Super Bowl victory. Unlike Peyton Manning, he actually helped his team win in his final playoff win.
LB Bryan Cox
Growing up this guy was always one of my favorites. He bounced around the league and the division a bit, but he’ll always be a Dolphin to me. He was big, intimidating and very good. I’ll never forget sticking a big pad in my shirt when I was young imitating Cox’s giant neck/back pad.
LB Joey Porter
Loved him when he was a Steeler and loved him more with the Dolphins. A lot of people forget his best season as a pass rusher was in Miami. In 2008 he recorded 17.5 sacks and four first fumbles. From his ferocious pass rush to his big personality, I was always a huge fan of this guy.
S Sean Taylor
Taylor was my favorite Hurricane of all time and I can confidently say, he was the greatest defensive player I’ve ever watched play college football. He was better than Ed Reed in college. I believe with all my heart he would have been the best ever. You know you’re great, when you’re drafted fifth overall as a safety. There is nothing he didn’t do well. The Meast was a freakishly athletic ball hawk that could flat take your head off your shoulders. If you want to have a good time, look up his hit on the punter in the Pro Bowl.
S Ed Reed
Right along with Taylor, is Ed Reed. Reed is another guy that changed the game. He’s the original center fielder. No one did what he did, quite like he did it. Quarterbacks always had to know where he was at all times, otherwise, it would be seven the other way. He didn’t play the run like Taylor, nonetheless, aside from the next guy there has never been a ball hawk close to as good as Reed.
CB Deion Sanders
Who else but Prime Time. He’s the greatest of all time and completely changed the game. Shutdown corner wasn’t a phrase before Prime. He managed to swing the balance of power in the NFL by changing teams in free agency, all while playing in the World Series for the Atlanta Braves (my favorite baseball team). Not only was he the greatest corner of all time, may have also been the greatest returner of all time, at least until his prodigy Devin Hester and a starting caliber wide receiver. There has never been a pro athlete quite like Dion and probably never will be again.
CB Pacman Jones
I’ve always loved Pacman. I know, it’s not a popular choice, but this is my list. Please feel free to tell me I suck while building your team in our forums. I love his talent, his nickname and I’m impressed with his turnaround. After nearly losing his career and having his daughter, he really turned his life around. He’s stayed completely out of trouble off the field and has kept himself in check on the field. Yes, he messed up in the Wild Card game, but I honestly don’t believe he should have been flagged. People love throwing the word thug around, and he was. Nevertheless, people change and he’s done a great job of doing so. As you may notice with Vick and Ricky, I’m a big fan of people that redeem themselves. An honorable mention goes to Charles Tillman here.
Nickel Terrelle Buckley
Buckley is the greatest Nickelback of all time. Believe it or not, he actually has 50 career interceptions. He may not have lived up to his high-draft spot, but he was a big time playmaker for what seems forever. He also played a part in 28 tackles. Here’s another fun fact: I helped make Dolphinopoly (Dolphins version of Monopoply) and demanded T-Buck be put in the game. I swear to it, my name is in the booklet under special thanks.
Special Teams
KR Rod Smart
Yes, I’m going with He Hate Me. The former XFL star was always a personal favorite of mine. Sure he wasn’t the greatest, but he was a very good kick returner. This is all about the personality. The minute he put He Hate Me on the back of his jersey, he had my heart. Plus, he’s pretty much the only thing worthwhile that came out of the XFL.
PR Devin Hester
It means a whole lot when people say that you are better than Deion Sanders, but Hester was. There is no debate here, Hester is the greatest of all time and almost dragged a Rex Grossman led team to a Super Bowl. That’s not easy to do. Yet another Miami Hurricane that is the greatest ever at what he does.
