2014 Fantasy Hockey: Week 11 Waiver Wire
Week 11 in fantasy hockey is starting, and some players are emerging as must-own players in many leagues. Finding players on the waiver wire is essential to winning in fantasy hockey and for replacing injured players, either for the short-team or long run. Let’s take a look at which players you should be targeting on the waiver wire this week.
Jiri Sekac | Montreal Canadiens | Yahoo! Ownership- 1%
Sekac may not be an easy name to pronounce, but fantasy owners are starting to get to know him very well. The 22-year-old has 12 points (6G, 6A) in 24 games with two powerplay goals (PPG) and 26 shots on goal (SOG). The kid has been on a hot streak so far this month–five points in six games–and finds himself playing alongside talented center-man Alex Galchenyuk and sniper Max Pacioretty. The Czech Rebublic native missed seven games in a row early in the season as a healthy scratch, and since then he has been one of Montreal’s most dynamic players. The Canadiens made room for Sekac by trading away under achiever Rene Bourque and fourth liner Travis Moen, and the chance for Sekac to be an every game player is there for him to take. Fantasy owners should pick him up now while he’s still unknown to most of the league.
Who I’d drop for him: Mason Raymond (12%), Vincent Lecavalier (7%), Ales Hemsky (21%)
Mike Santorelli | Toronto Maple Leafs | Yahoo! Ownership- 15%
Santorelli might be one of the most underrated players in the fantasy world so far this year. The 29-year-old has 22 points (6G, 16A) in 30 games with a plus-17 rating and 51 SOG. The Vancouver native is second in the NHL in plus-minus, fourth on the team in scoring and is averaging a healthy 17 minutes of ice time in the month of December. The sixth round draft pick in 2004 is playing on the second line with Nazem Kadri and Daniel Winnik and is on pace to beat his point total from last year by a mile (28 points in 49 games with the Canucks). He’s not seeing very much time on the powerplay (an average of 20 seconds to be exact), but his contributions five on five are very impressive and he should be able to maintain this pace for the rest of the season.
Who I’d drop for him: Justin Williams (41%), Derek Stepan (56%), Kyle Turris (63%)
Tom Wilson | Washington Capitals | Yahoo! Ownership- 3%
Wilson is in his second year in the NHL and could be a name fantasy owners hear more about in the near future. The numbers so far this season wont blow you away– nine points (2G, 7A) in 19 games with 60 penalty minutes and 28 SOG. So why am I telling people to add him? For starters, the 20-year-old finds himself playing with two of the most talented player in the NHL–Nicklas Backstrom and Alex Ovechkin–and is on a small hot streak of four points in his last three games. The 16th overall pick in 2012 had ten points in 82 games last season for the Capitals and will definitely surpass that this season. The potential for Wilson to put up numbers is there as long as he plays on that top line.
The Toronto native isn’t seeing any powerplay time and probably wont this season, but you can’t help but wonder how many points he could put up playing with a five-time 50 goal scorer and one of the best set up men in the league. The kid can rack up the penalty minutes and could score 15 goals by the end of the season, making him a poor man’s Scott Hartnell. Every fantasy owners loves a “ Stat Stuffer” and Wilson can be that guy that can fill multiple point categories in one night. Fantasy owners should be taking a flyer on him now.
Who I’d drop for him: Cody Hodgson (7%), Alexander Semim (36%) Andrew Shaw (16%)
