2014 Fantasy Hockey: Week 13 Waiver Wire

Source: Ronald Martinez/Getty Images North America

Week thirteen in fantasy hockey is starting, and some players are emerging as must-own players in many leagues. Finding players on the waiver wire is essential to winning a fantasy hockey, and for replacing injured players, either for the short-team or long run. Let’s take a look at which players you should be targeting on the waiver wire this week

Colton Sceviour | Dallas Stars | Yahoo! Ownership—1%

If you don’t follow the Dallas Stars closely (like our managing editor, Brett Talley), then you probably don’t know who Colton Sceviour is. The winger from Red Deer, Alberta could be the best player on waivers right now. The 25-year-old has 11 points (4G, 7A) in 33 games with a plus-3 rating and 45 shots on goal (SOG). The numbers don’t scream “must own,” but he’s now getting the opportunity to play with captain Jamie Benn and NHL scoring leader Tyler Seguin. He doesn’t see much power play time, averaging just over one minute a game, but his point production in December was 0.63 points per game (P/GP), and his ice time has continued to increase as the season has progressed. Sceviour makes for a sneaky play in fantasy hockey and could easily reach 30 points by the end of the season if the trend continues.

Players I’d drop for him: Alexander Semin (34%), Chris Stewart (7%), Carl Hagelin (19%)

Mathieu Perreault | Winnipeg Jets | Yahoo! Ownership—13%

Perreault looks to have finally found his game. The 27-year-old has 20 points (9G, 11A) in 38 games with a minus-4 rating and 75 SOG. The Drummondville, Quebec native struggled early in the season to say the least, but now seems to have found a home on the team second line with Mark Scheifele and Michael Frolik.

Here is Perreault’s production this season by month:

October November December
Games Played 10 14 13
Goals 0 2 7
Assists 3 1 6
Points 3 3 13
Plus/Minus -3 -1 +1
TOI/Game 15:54 15:58 17:23

Perreault definitely isn’t the same player he was at the beginning of the year, and it may not last till the end of the season, but right now he’s hot, and fantasy owners should want to take advantage of his play before he cools off again.

Players I’d Drop for him: Ales Hemsky (20%), Nail Yakupov (30%), Evgeny Kuznetsov (36%).

Michael Hutchinson | Winnipeg Jets | Yahoo! Ownership—51%

The reason the Jets are in a wildcard position is greatly due to the play of Hutchinson. The Barrie, Ontario native is 10-3-2 in 16 games with a goals-against-average (GAA) of 1.81 and a .937 save percentage (SV%).  Both those numbers rank  1st in the NHL, so its no surprise that Hutchinson has started four of the last five games for Winnipeg. The 24-year-old is clearly the better goalie, and it’s only a matter of time before Winnipeg declares him as the team’s starting goalie. Fantasy owners who own Ondrej Pavelec, or need some extra depth at goaltending, should look to scoop him up if he’s still available.

Who I’d Drop for him: Ondrej Pavalec (61%), Mike Smith (56%),
