Prize structure is a big point of contention with me recently. In my trials and tribulations over at DK, I have been extremely frustrated by the payout structure in big tournaments, finding that if I finish in the 91st to 90th percentile, I sometimes don’t even double my money. The big attraction there is first place, then a substantial drop-off occurs.

I have been finding that the good folks over at Draft Street have something quite unique in terms of pricing model, and have a very excellent payout structure. It can be tougher to cash on Draft Street sometimes, but when you cash, you will at the very least, double your money (but you usually will at least triple it). For me, that’s what I look for in a GPP tournament. Sure, the big attraction is always first place, but how attainable is that really? If I want to double my money for much better odds, I will just play double ups — which Draft Street has by the way, with no rake.

Pricing is a bit odd for newcomers, but once it is mastered, you can gain a real advantage, especially if you enjoy getting cute and picking depth lines like I do.

It’s interesting, because yesterday my low priced players actually were just as good if not better than most of my super-stars. Benn and Seguin got on the board as I expected, but they did not open the floodgates, which in fairness, against Joey MacDonald, should have occurred. Riley Sheahan, Tomas Tatar and Jordie Benn were great though, as they all came through nicely. Of course, Cory Schneider also decided yesterday was turd laying day — notice he was 41% owned, so he ruined everyone, not just us.

This contest gives you 5-8 options (depending on Tier) to choose from, and you try to pick the best team out of those options. It is a nice format because it condenses the player pool significantly, and is a great game type on very large slates when you won’t be tempted to waste money by trying to make a million different lineups so you can get exposure to everyone.

Kuemper has been elite this year, as he sports a .927 save percentage on the year. The rookie goaltender is turning in an impressive season, and should be a candidate for rookie of the year. Kuemper is the most likely candidate to get a win tonight, although Jonas Hiller is tempting as well, but they are on the road.
