Twelve games are on tap tonight in the NHL. My strategy tonight is to exploit some vulnerable teams playing back-to-back games, along with some goalies that could be in for a rough night. With so many games going on, I’m looking to move away from large stacks (3-4 players) and focusing more on parings (2 players). With that, let’s take a look at each match up and sort through which players you should be looking to start.

Game Breakdowns:

Pittsburgh Penguins @ New Jersey Devils—Start time—7:00 PM

 Quick Stats:

  • Pittsburgh is 9-3-4 on the road this season
  • 3rd in goals per game (3.03 G/GP)
  • 5th in goals against per game (2.29 GA/GP)
  • 6th ranked power play (23.1%)
  • 3rd ranked penalty kill (87.3%)
  • Averaging 30.9 shots per game (10th in the NHL)

  • New Jersey is 4-6-5 at home this season
  • 28th in goals per game (2.08 G/GP)
  • 20th in goals against per game (2.73 GA/GP)
  • 10th ranked power play (20.2%)
  • 23rd ranked penalty kill (78.2%)
  • Averaging 25.7 shots per game (Second-last in the NHL)

The Devils are not a very good team, and the Penguins are in the top ten of every offensive category, so it could be a long night for the Devils. New coaches Scott Stevens and Adam Oates will need quite a few games to try and get the Devils back on track, and it wont start tonight. Sidney Crosby ($8900) is obviously a safe bet, but hasn’t had a great month of December—scoring only one goal and adding three assists. If you elect to go with Crosby, taking his line mate Chris Kunitz ($4700) is definitely the way to go, especially at that price. A pairing of Evgeni Malkin ($8700) and Patric Hornquist ($6500) is a good play as well, but I would save my money and go with the first option. Marc-Andre Fleury ($8800) is a pricy option, but could definitely end up with a 20 save shutout in this contest. An excellent GPP option tonight is Scott Harrington ($2500). He’s playing alongside Kris Letang ($5800) and could end up with a point or two.

As for the Devils, the only GPP combo I would go with if you REALLY need to save money and try to go for the big prize is Scott Gomez ($2800) and Jaromir Jagr ($3900). It’s cheap and could provide some value, but don’t bet on it.

All Games: Sidney Crosby—C, Evgeni Malkin—C, Patrick Hornquist—W, Chris Kunitz—W, Marc-Andre Fleury—G

GPP only: Scott Harrington—D, Scott Gomez—C, Jaromir Jagr—W

Detroit Red Wings @ Boston Bruins—Start Time—7:00PM

 Quick Stats:

  • Detroit is 7-4-3 on the road this season
  • 13th in goals per game (2.83 G/GP)
  • 4th in goals against per game (2.28 GA/GP)
  • 3rd ranked power play (24.3%)
  • 2nd ranked penalty kill (88.4%)
  • Averaging 308 shots per game (11th best in the NHL)

  • Boston is 11-6-2 at home this season
  • 21st in goals per game (2.53G/GP)
  • 16th in goals against per game (2.64 GA/GP)
  • 21st ranked power play (16.5%)
  • 21st ranked penalty kill (79.3%)
  • Averaging 30.1 shots per game (15th in the NHL)

This game is a hard one for me to read. On one hand, it could be a high scoring game finishing 6-4, and on the other hand, it may finish 2-0. Detroit is the favorite to win, but I wouldn’t look to stack the top line. The line of Tomas Tatar ($4700), Riley Sheahan ($3400), and Tomas Jurco ($2900) would be my choice for the night. Henrick Zetterberg ($6400) and Pavel Datsyuk ($5700) aren’t a terrible decision, but I expect them to see a lot of Zdeno Chara ($5000) and that’s never an easy night.

For Boston, Patrice Bergeron ($6800) is an excellent play, but I would save my money and spend it elsewhere if possible. Along with Chara, Dougie Hamilton ($4700) makes for a great GPP option. In nets, I would consider using Tuukka Rask ($8400), but there area lot better options I would go with before.

All Games: Pavel Datsyul—C, Henrik Zetterberg—C, DET second line, Zdeno Chara—D, Patrice Bergeron (if he plays)—C

GPP Only: Dougie Hamilton—D, Tuukka Rask—G

Montreal Canadiens @ Carolina Hurricanes—Start Time—7:00PM

 Quick Stats:

  • Montreal is 9-7-1 on the road this season
  • 19th in goals per game (2.6 G/GP)
  • 7th in goals against per game (2.37 GA/GP)
  • 23rd ranked power play (15.3%)
  • 6th ranked penalty kill (86.3%)
  • Averaging 27.5 shots per game (28th in the NHL)

  • Carolina is 6-7-2 at home this season
  • 29th in goals per game (2.00 G/GP)
  • 15th in goals against per game (2.63 GA/GP)
  • 19th ranked power play (17.1%)
  • 9th ranked penalty kill (84.7%)
  • Averaging 29.3 shots per game (21st in the NHL)

This is a match up I wouldn’t spend too much time on. The only real safe bet I would go with is Carey Price ($9400). He’s the most expensive player of the day, but Montreal doesn’t give up a lot of goals, and Carolina cant score any. As for GPP, a stack of Alex Galchenyuk ($5500) and Max Pacioretty ($6400) would be the best bet. I wouldn’t look for Galchenyuk to repeat his three-goal performance like he did last time, but he could end up with some points by the end of the night.

As for Carolina, if anyone is going to score goals, it’s going to be Eric Staal ($5400). He will get a boost with brother Jordan Staal (not eligible) set to make his return, but I wouldn’t expect to see much from anyone else.

All Games: Carey Price—G

GPP Only: Alex Galchenyuk—C, Max Pacioretty—W, Eric Staal—C

Washington Capitals @ New York Islanders—Start Time—7:00PM

 Quick Stats:

  • Washington is 11-6-2 on the road this year
  • 8th in goals per game (2.89 G/GP)
  • 11th in goals against per game (2.49 GA/GP)
  • 5th ranked power play (23.8%)
  • 24th ranked penalty kill (78.2%)
  • Averaging 30.2 shots per game (13th in the NHL)

  • New York is 13-4-0 at home this year
  • 7th in goals per game (2.91 G/GP)
  • 21 in goals against per game (2.77 GA/GP)
  • 17th ranked power play (17.9%)
  • 30th ranked penalty kill (73.7%)
  • Averaging 32.8 Shots per game (Second best in the NHL)

This could be a very high scoring game and DFS players should take advantage of it. The Islanders are favorites to win, but I expect Washington to come out on top. The main player I will be trying to fit into every lineup is Alex Ovechkin ($9000). The price is high, but with New York ranked dead last on the penalty kill, Ovie could light the lamp more than once on this night. If you go with Ovie, it only makes sense to take his partner in crime, Nicklas Backstrom ($6100). Sticking with Washington, Mike Green ($4900) becomes an expensive option that could pay off. I would plug him in if I have the cap room.

As for the Islanders, John Tavares ($7800) and Kyle Okposo ($6300) are a cheeper stack that will definitely produce some points, but I still like the Ovie/Backstrom stack a lot better. On Defence, Nick Leddy ($3300) is a great choice and could provide good fantasy value at that price. Johnny Boychuk ($4600) is a great play as well, but the price isn’t as tempting. Use him if you have the cap space.

All Games: Alex Ovechkin—W, Nicklas Backstrom—C, John Tavare—C, Kyle Okposo—W, Mike Green—D, Nick Leddy—D

GPP Only: Johnny Boychuk—D, Jason Chimera ($2700)—W (Stacked with Ovie & Backstrom).

Buffalo Sabres @ Ottawa Senators—Start Time—7:30PM

 Quick Stats:

  • Buffalo is 4-11-1 on the road this season
  • 30th in goals per game (1.86 G/GP)
  • 27th in goals against per game (3.25 GA/GP)
  • 30th ranked power play (8.9%)
  • 27th ranked penalty kill (76.6%)
  • Averaging 23.6 shots per game (Last in the NHL)

  • Ottawa is 7-4-4 at home this season
  • 20th in goals per game (2.54 G/GP)
  • 18th in goals against per game (2.69 GA/GP)
  • 16th ranked power play (18.4%)
  • 13th ranked penalty kill (82.3%)
  • Averaging 29.2 shots per game (22nd in the NHL)

It’s time to pick on the Buffalo Sabres once again. Ottawa should win this one easily, but Buffalo scored three in the third to rally and beat the Islanders 4-3 in a SO, so it’s not a done deal. Despite that, I like Ottawa’s second line in Mike Hoffman ($3200), Mika Zibanejad ($4000), and Bobby Ryan ($5100) for both cash and GPP. Another great play is definitely Erik Karlsson ($6200), but the price might be hard to digest. In nets, Craig Anderson ($7700) is expected to start, and at that price, I would use him in both cash and GPP lineups.

If you insist on using a player from the Sabres, Jhonas Enroth ($7000) is the only player I would really roll with. If you wanted to go with a mini stack of Matt Moulson ($4600) and Tyler Ennis ($4800) I could live with that, but it’s a high risk/high reward play.

All Games: Mike Hoffman/Mika Zibanejab/Bobby Ryan, Erik Karlsson—D, Craig Anderson

GPP Only: Jhonas Enroth—G, Matt Moulson—W, Tyler Ennis—C

Toronto Maple Leafs @ Tampa Bay Lightning—Start Time—7:30PM

 Quick Stats:

  • Toronto is 6-4-3 on the road this season
  • 1st in goals per game (3.33 G/GP)
  • 25th in goals against per game (2.97 GA/GP)
  • 9th ranked power play (20.4%)
  • 10th ranked penalty kill (83.5%)
  • Averaging 29.7 shots per game (18th in the NHL)

  • Tampa Bay is 14-4-1 at home this season
  • 2nd in goals per game (3.19 G/GP)
  • 13th in goals against per game (2.51 GA/GP)
  • 15th ranked power play (18.5%)
  • 14th ranked penalty kill (81.7%)
  • Averaging 29.5 shots per game (19th in the NHL)

This game is GPP gold. I wouldn’t have any problem with building a lineup that consists mostly of players from these two teams. The goal total is set a T:6.0, with Tampa Bay the favorite to win. The player I will be playing in every lineup is Nikita Kucherov ($5300). He’s got an excellent matchup and stacking him with Tyler Johnson ($6400) could pay dividends by the end of the night. Steven Stamkos ($8500) always plays well against Toronto and pairing him with his new winger Cederic Paquette($2500) is a decent GPP play. If you really want to go cheap on a stack, paring Paqueette with Brett Connolly ($2500) is definitely the way to go. Both are playing alongside Stamkos and I expect Carlyle to use Dion Phaneuf and Cody Franson ($4300) against the Johnson line.

As for Toronto, they are playing their second game in two nights, but they are averaging the most goals per game and could find a way to score a few. A great Cash option tonight is Joffrey Lupul ($5100), who finds himself taking the spot of James Van Riemsdyk ($7200) on the top line. If you find yourself using Lupul, paring him with Tyler Bozak ($5000) is the way to go. I like Phil Kessel ($8300), but at that price, you can find better value.  Ben Bishop ($7200) is a bargain at that price, but expect him to give up some goals, making him a GPP only.

All Games: Tyler Johnson—C, Nikita Kucherov—W, Steven Stamkos—C, Joffrey Lupul—W, Tyler Bozak—C

GPP Only: Phil Kessel—W, Ben Bishop—G, James Van Riemsdyk—W, Cody Franson

Colorado Avalanche @ St. Louis Blues—Start Time—8:00 PM

 Quick Stats:

  • Colorado is 6-6-5 on the road this season
  • 22nd in goals per game (2.51 G/GP)
  • 24th in goals against per games (2.97 GA/GP)
  • 25th ranked power play (14.7%)
  • 7th ranked penalty kill (85.0%)
  • Averaging 29.1 shots per game (23rd in the NHL)

  • St. Louis is 12-4-1 at home this season
  • 9th in goals per game (2.86 G/GP)
  • 12th in goals against per game (2.51 GA/GP)
  • 1st ranked powerplay (24.8%)
  • 25th ranked penalty kill (77.5%)
  • Averaging 31.2 shots per game (8th in the NHL)

This game is going to be fun to watch.  Semyon Varlamov ($7000) and Martin Brodeur ($6700) are confirmed to start, and I don’t recommend any of them, but if you waited till the end to pick a goalie, go with Brodeur. Up front it’s pretty simple, stack Jori Lehtera ($3400) and Vladimir Tarasenko ($7100). Colorado is going to try to slow down St. Louis’ top line, leaving a lot of room for the two kids to put up some points. On defense, Kevin Shattenkirk ($ 5300) is my go to guy and I expect him to be able to put up multiple points. If you want a second option, a mini stack of Alexander Steen ($5600) and David Backes ($5300) is definitely worth it, but for the same price, I prefer the previous option.

For Colorado it’s going to be a hit or miss. Brodeur wasn’t very good his last time out and the Avalanche have the talent to score some goals. The two players I would consider using would be Matt Duchene ($5200) and Nathan Mackinnon ($6200). Ryan O’Reilly ($5000) and Gabriel Landeskog ($5700) is a slightly cheaper option, but either one is fine with me. If you need a cheap option, Max Talbot ($2700) is still on the top line and could find himself with a point at the end of the evening. If you need a high risk/high reward option on defense, Tyson Barrie ($4100) is the player I would look to use.

All Games: Vladimir Tarasenko—W, Jori Lehtera—C, Alexander steen—W, David Backes—C, Kevin Shattenkirk—D, Matt Duchene—C, Nathan Mackinnon—W, Ryan O’Reilly—C, Gabreil Landeskog—W

GPP Only: Max Talbot—W, Tyson Barrie—D, Martin Brodeur—G

Minnesota Wild @ Winnipeg Jets—Start Time—8:00PM

 Quick Stats:

  • Minnesota is 7-9-0 on the road this season
  • 11th in goals per game (2.85 G/GP)
  • 22nd in goals against per game (2.79 GA/GP)
  • 26th ranked power play (14.4%)
  • 4th ranked penalty kill (87.0%)
  • Averaging 31.7 shots per game (4th in the NHL)

  • Winnipeg is 8-6-3 at home this season
  • 23rd in goals per game (2.50 G/GP)
  • 3rd in goals against per game (2.25 GA/GP)
  • 24th ranked power play (15.2%)
  • 8th ranked penalty kill (84.9%)
  • Averaging 30.1 shots per game (14th in the NHL)

Here’s another game that could see a lot of goals. Winnipeg is a team with a better road record than home record, but Minnesota isn’t a great team away from Excel Energy Center.  For Winnipeg, I would look to go with Bryan Little ($5000) and either Blake Wheeler ($6300) or Andrew Ladd ($5200), depending on your cap space. After that, it’s hard to determine who will have a good night. Dustin Byfuglien ($5800) is a great start on D and could find the net by the end of the night. Ondrej Pavelec ($6400) is expected to get the start, which isn’t ideal, but he makes for a good GPP play if you want to go really cheap on goaltending

Minnesota likes to give up a lot of goals, so I’m keeping my options with them limited. The only two players I would go with in cash games are Zach Parise ($7300) and Jason Pominvile ($6600), but I wouldn’t feel confident with them at their price. As for GPP, Mikko Koivu ($4200) finds himself centering the top line so he could put up some points, especially if Pavelec starts. A mini stack I would go with if I wanted to save some salary would be Charlie Coyle ($3900) and Jason Zucker ($2800), if he plays.

All Games: Byan Little—C, Blake Wheeler or Andrew Ladd –W, Dustin Byfuglien—D, Zach Parise—W, Jason Pominville—W.

GPP Only: Ondrej Pavelec—G, Mikko Koive—C, Charlie Coyle—C, Jason Zucker—W.

New York Rangers @ Dallas Stars—Start Time—8:30PM

 Quick Stats:

  • New York is 7-5-1 on the road this season
  • 5th in goals per game (2.97 G/GP)
  • 8th in goals against per game (2.42 GA/GP)
  • 18th ranked power play (17.1%)
  • 12th ranked penalty kill (82.9%)
  • Averaging 29.7 shots per game (17th in the NHL)

  • Dallas is 6-7-5 at home this season
  • 10th in goals per game (2.85 G/GP)
  • 29th in goals against per game (3.38 GA/GP)
  • 22nd ranked power play (16%)
  • 22nd raked penalty kill (79.2%)
  • Averaging 30.0 shots per game (16th in the NHL)

Dallas is not very good at keeping the puck out of their net. In fact, the only team worse than them is Edmonton. This means ill be paying a lot of Rangers tonight. If you want a good mini stack, I suggest Rick Nash ($8500) and Derick Brassard ($4700) or Derek Stepan ($6100) and Martin St.Louis ($5200). Both options are very good. If you’re looking for some value on defense, Dan Boyle ($3800) is the player I would go with. If he ends up starting, Henrik Lundqvist ($9200) is going to cost you and arm and a leg, but he has an excellent chance to come out with a win. If you’re looking for a player to fill out a lineup, Mats Zuccarello ($4800) is the player I would go with.

For Dallas, it doesn’t seem like a good night to start anyone. Tyler Seguin ($9300) and Jamie Benn ($6700) are the only players I would go with in a GPP, nothing more. If you’re really desperate and need someone to just fill out a remaining spot, Colton Sceviour ($3300) is expected to play on the top line and is a good bargain play.

All Games: Rick Nash—W, Derick Brassard—C, Martin St.Louis—W, Derek Stepan—C, Dan Boyle—D, Henrik Lundqvist—G

GPP Only: Mats Zuccarello—W, Tyler Seguin—C, Jamie Benn—W, Colton Sceviour—W.

Nashville Predators @ Chicago Blackhawks—Start Time—8:30PM

 Quick Stats:

  • Nashville is 10-7-1 on the road
  • 15th in goals per game (2.79 G/GP)
  • 2nd in goals against per game (2.06 GA/GP)
  • 28th ranked power play (13.5%)
  • 20th ranked penalty kill (79.6%)
  • Averaging 32.1 shots per game (3rd in the NHL)

  • Chicago is 12-4-1 at home this season
  • 4th in goals per game (3.00 G/GP)
  • 1st in goals against per game (2.03 GA/GP)
  • 14th ranked power play (18.7%)
  • 1st ranked penalty kill (91.0%)
  • Averaging 35.2 shots per game (1st in the NHL)

This is another game I would consider avoiding. Both these teams rank 1-2 in goals against per game, and are in the top three in shots per game. Its hard to believe this game will see a lot of goals, but if it does happen, it’s because Corey Crawford ($8300) got the start. The only real value here in cash games is Pekka Rinne ($8600) because he’s the best fantasy hockey goalie. Apart from him, I’d leave this matchup alone for tonight, but if you must start someone, Filip Forsberg ($5900) and Mike Ribeiro ($ 4200) would be my GPP stack of choice.

All Games: Pekka Rinne—G

GPP Only: Filip Forsberg—W, Mike Ribeiro—C.

Los Angeles Kings @ Calgary Flames—Start Time—9:00PM

 Quick Stats:

  • Los Angeles is 4-7-5 on the road this season
  • 16th in goals per game (2.75 G/GP)
  • 6th in goals against per game (2.36 GA/GP)
  • 8th ranked power play (20.6%)
  • 18th ranked penalty kill (80.2%)
  • Averaging 31.6 shots per game (6th in the NHL)

  • Calgary is 9-6-2 at home this season
  • 12th in goals per game (2.84 G/GP)
  • 17th in goals against per game (2.65 GA/GP)
  • 13th ranked power play (19.2%)
  • 26th ranked penalty kill (76.8%)
  • Averaging 27.5 shots per game (27th in the NHL)

The Kings are favorites to win this game, despite only having won 4 games on the road this season. The game will most likely be a low-scoring game, but that shouldn’t stop you from taking advantage of a decent matchup. The stack I would go with in this game would be Johnny Gaudreau ($5600), Markus Grandlund ($2800), and Jiri Hudler ($4900). The best value in this game is definitely in net with Jonas Hiller ($7100). If you need a GPP play, Sean Monahan  ($4800) is the player I would go with and pair him with stud defenseman Mark Giordano ($6500). The matchup may not be perfect, but if anyone has a chance to score on the power play, it’s those two.

For L.A, the value is found on the first line with Marian Gaborik ($6400), Anze Kopitar ($7000) and Jeff Carter ($6400). I wouldn’t suggest stacking all three players in one lineup, but any two of those players works for me. If you need good value on defense, Drew Doughty ($5500) is the safest bet to go with. As for GPP, Tyler Toffoli ($4400) could find himself scoring a goal tonight.

All Games: Calgary first line, Jonas Hiller—G, Marian Gaborik—W, Anze Kopitar—C, Jeff Carter—W, Drew Doughty—D

GPP: Sean Monahan—C, Mark Giordano—D, Tyler Toffoli—W.

Philadelphia Flyers @ Phoenix Coyotes—Start Time: 9:00PM

 Quick Stats:

  • Philadelphia is 6-10-3 on the road this season
  • 14th in goals per game (2.80 G/GP)
  • 23rd in goals against per game (2.86 GA/GP)
  • 7th ranked power play (21.6%)
  • 29th ranked penalty kill (74.4%)
  • Averaging 29.4 shots per game
  • Arizona is 6-8-3 at home this season

  • 25th in goals per game (2.26 G/GP)
  • 26thin goals against per game (3.17 GA/GP)
  • 11th ranked power play (19.5%)
  • 28th ranked penalty kill (75.4%)
  • Averaging 28.8 shots per game (24th in the NHL)

This matchup depends solely on whether or not Mike Smith ($6500) gets the start. If he does, stack as many Philadelphia players as possible. Smith is not a very good goalie, and Arizona isn’t a good team, those two combined make for a lot of goals. The two players I would try to fit into every lineup possible are Claude Giroux ($8600) and Jakub Voracek ($8000). The price for both of them is extremely high, but have I mentioned how bad Mike Smith is? Since you’ll be spending so much money on two guys, Michael Raffl ($3200) is an excellent cash play to help complete the stack. If you don’t want to stack the entire line, Scott Laughton ($2500) is the best bargain of the night. On Defense, Mark Streit ($4300) is the guy to own in both Cash and GPP. If you really want to go big or go home, Ray Emery ($6600) is someone I would go with in GPP ONLY if you need too as a last resort.

Now lets flip the table, if Devan Dubnyk ($7400) gets the start, I’m going to fade almost every Philly player and go with a few more Coyotes. Antoine Vermette ($3900) and Mikkel Boedker ($3700) becomes a stack I’m willing to use in Cash games and GPP along with Keith Yandle ($5500) or Oliver Ekman-Larsson ($5100). For GPP only, Sam Gagner ($4700) with both defenseman is a stack that could see a healthy amount of production. I’m not as confident with Dubnyk starting, but its best to be prepared for both situations.

All Games: If Smith Starts: Jakub Voracek—W, Claude Giroux—C, Michael Raffl—W, Scott Laughton—C, Mark Streit—D If Dubnyk Starts: Antione Vermette—C, Mikkel Boedker—W, Keith Yandle—D, OEL—D

GPP Only: Sam Gagne—W, Ray Emery—G, Devan Dubnyk—G
