The Fantasy Baseball Daily Fix, Tale Of Two Davids: Wells’ Perfect Game, Wright Breaks Back
On this day in 1998, the New York Yankees’ David Wells sat down twenty seven consecutive Twins to become the 15th pitcher in baseball history to toss a perfect game — the first ever in Yankee Stadium.
1998 became a historic season for David Wells as he finished 18-4 with eight complete games and five shutouts. Wells was recognized by an All-Star Game appearance, a third place finish in the AL Cy Young race and a 16th place finish in the AL MVP voting. To top it off, Wells finished the playoffs 4-0, was named the ALCS MVP and became a World Series Champion when the Yankees swept the Padres.
David Wright was diagnosed with a stress fracture in his lower back, leaving the face of the Mets’ franchise sidelined for about two weeks. The team is currently seeking a second opinion in the hope that Wright can avoid a stint on the DL.With Wright’s status up in the air, check to see if these third basemen are available in your league in case he hits the disabled list:
Jhonny Peralta (CLE), Alberto Callaspo (LAA), Chase Headley (SD), Chone Figgins (SEA) and Ryan Roberts (ARZ).No home runs for
Jose Bautista last night? That’s horse sh*t! He did however slap two singles to earn his tenth multi-hit game of the season. Someone forgot to mention that Bautista, the league leader in moon shots (16), has also missed eight games so far this season. This guy is out of his mind.Kansas City Royals’ pitcher
Kyle Davies left with an injury after collecting just one out in the first inning. With the bullpen in a frenzy, Vin Mazzaro was tabbed in the third and and promptly surrendered 14 earned runs on 11 hits and three walks, while striking out only two. Historical tidbit Mazzaro probably doesn’t want to be associated with: Jason Stark tweeted that the last reliever to give up 14 ER was Les McCrabb for the Philadelphia A’s in 1942!Hope you didn’t get impatient with
Carlos Gonzalez. He’s gone yard twice and knocked in five runs in the last three games — he’s heating up, unlike that @JoeyBats19 bum!The Fix’s own Jesse Mendelson recommended
Michael Brantley in this week’s waiver wire column, Wired & Baked. Brantley seems to be filling in just fine for the recently DL’d Grady Sizemore in the leadoff spot for the Indians. Last night Brantley was 2 of 4, with a round tripper, four RBIs, two walks and two runs scored. He is owned in just 18% of Y! leagues. Matt LaPorta preyed on the Royals’ pitchers while going 4 for 4 with two doubles, a run scored and four RBIs.Take your base:
Carlos Quentin has been plunked a league leading eight times in thus far in 2011.As noted in our most recent
Fantasy Baseball Roundtable, you still have time to “buy” on Andrew McCutchen who went 2 for 4, with a run scored and an RBI in a 4-2 Pirates’ loss to the Nationals. Brian Roberts (6), Asdrubal Cabrera (5) & Jose Reyes (16) each swiped two bags last evening. Colby Lewis dished a complete game shutout, surrendering just five hits and one walk while fanning seven. With four straight quality starts under his belt, it’s safe to say that Colby Lewis should be owned in more than the current 57% of Y! leagues. Tommy Hanson whiffed ten Astros en route to his fifth win of the season. Hanson’s improved his already stellar 2011 ratios to a 2.35 ERA and a 0.99 WHIP. Kyle Farnsworth (8), Frank Francisco (4), Fernando Salas (4), Drew Storen (9), Craig Kimbrel (11), Francisco Cordero (8), Mike Adams (1), Huston Street (13), John Axford (9) and Leo Nunez (15) each earned saves last night.
