2011 Fantasy Baseball Daily Fix: Giants Claim Heath Bell, Yankees Claim Carlos Pena

Heath Bell was claimed on waivers by the Giants.  The Padres and Giants now have 48 hours to agree to a trade, otherwise Bell reverts back to the Padres.  It might have just been a tactical move to block Arizona from claiming him, or it might speak to bigger issues with Brian "the beard" Wilson.  Also in waiver news, the Yankees claimed Carlos Pena.

Big game for Coco Crisp, 4 hits, 2 home runs and 5 RBIs as the A's once again beat the Yankees.  Not to be outdone, Joey Votto had 5 hits, 2 home runs and 4 RBIs.

Not a great list of starters throwing on Thursday, the top trio would have to be Ryan Vogelson, Jeremy Hellickson and Alexi Ogando.  All pretty solid, but none are that inspiring.

Aramis Ramirez takes home the hottest player of the week honors with a .636 avg, 2 home runs, 9 RBIs and 1.679 OPS.  A bright spot in another wasted summer in Chicago.

From the awwkkwwaard baseball files come this gem from
nationalpastime.com, on this day in baseball history:

Prior to the Old Timer’s Game at Yankee Stadium, shortstop Phil Rizzuto is asked to consult with general manager George Weiss and manager Casey Stengel concerning a player move necessitated by reacquiring Enos Slaughter off waivers from the A’s. After making several suggestions about who should be cut from the squad, the veteran infielder is told by Weiss he is the player about to be let go.

The long, and literally, painful summer for A-Rod continues as he is once again sideline with an injury, this time a sprained left thumb.  Maybe he should stick to the poker tables.

It is a true testament to how putrid the A's were during the first half of the season that even with the 6th best team batting average since the all-star break they rank 26th in batting average for the year.
