2011 Fantasy Baseball Rookie Report Week 19: Has Arizona Struck Goldschmidt?

Picture

Paul Goldschmidt (see credits below)

1B- JESUS GUZMAN (SAN DIEGO) – Guzman has been going off since the all star break with a .390/4/21 line. He originally came up as a third baseman but is now playing first for the Padres. He also qualifies as a SS in some leagues making him much more valuable. His minor league numbers show consistent batting average and home run lines. The knock on Guzman is that he has a sub par glove. He is now owned in 89% of ESPN leagues. Grab him while he is hot !!

1B- PAUL GOLDSCHMIDT (ARIZONA)- Goldschmidt's numbers at AA Mobile were .306/30/94 in only .366 AB's. He also stole nine bases and had a 1.061 OPS. Do I need to say anymore? In his brief major league stint he has struggled a bit with only a .190 average, one home run and nine K's in 21 AB's. I love the potential here and if you need help in the home run categories he is worth a shot. The Diamondbacks do not really have many options at first so he will definitely get his playing time.

2B- BRETT LAWRIE (TORONTO) – Brett finally got the call last week to come up for the Blue Jays. In his three game weekend series against Baltimore he hit .454 with a home run and two RBI's. The word is getting out about the Blue Jay's number one prospect as he is now owned in 44 % of ESPN leagues and is the number two most added free agent in CBS leagues. If you need help at the second sack position grab him quickly.

2B- JOSE ALTUVE (HOUSTON) – Altuve has made the jump from AA to the majors and has done extremely well hitting .348 in 18 games. He has 23 hits in 66 AB's  and shown signs of a seasoned veteran. He can help you in the stolen base, runs and batting average categories. With the influx of rookie talent at the second base position this year I would take a wait and see approach on Altuve for the time being.

OF- LUCAS DUDA (NEW YORK METS) – Lucas should get full playing time now with the season ending injury to Daniel Murphy. He qualifies at first and the OF in several league formats. This season he is hitting .272 with three home runs and 24 RBI's in 59 games. The 6'4" 255 lb slugger has a sweet swing and just needs time to adjust to the major league level. Keep an eye on him but not worth an add at this time.

OF- J.D. MARTINEZ (HOUSTON) – Martinez has played since the Astros moved Hunter Pence on to the Phillies. In 32 AB's he has three home runs and 11 RBI's. The Astros have inserted him into the clean up spot and it looks like he is there to stay. J.D. has never batted under .340 in any of his minor league stints. If you are looking for power and batting average he just may be a diamond in the rough. He will get plenty of playing time to show what he has. Must pick up for now in N.L. only leagues.

BRYCE HARPER WATCH – Bryce is starting to get things going a bit now at Harrisburg where he had been struggling to get off to a good start. He is now up to a .262 batting average with two home runs, eight RBI's and five SB's. Harper just missed the cycle recently in a game versus Erie.
