2015 Fantasy Football, Week 2 Monday Night Football Preview: Jets at Colts

Monday September 21, 2015
New York Jets @ Indianapolis Colts

This could be a really good matchup. The Colts are a team that can beat or lose to just about any decent team. Indy has an elite young quarterback but the team is so horribly constructed and sometimes it really shows on the field. They were beat down by the Bills last week. This is because their offensive and defensive lines are horrific. They have also loaded up on players well past their prime for some odd reason. They will be forced to rely on guys like Andre Johnson, Frank Gore, Trent Cole and Robert Mathis. Ryan Grigson may be the worst general manager in the NFL and Jim Irsay is among the worst owners. They just happened to have the top pick when Andrew Luck was coming out.

New York Jets: Key Players

QB Ryan Fitzpatrick
Fitzpatrick is a pretty solid option this week if you’re in a 30-team league, otherwise he should probably be on your waiver wire. He is extremely mistake prone and quite frankly just isn’t very good. However, he may be a better option than resident punching bag Geno Smith.
Verdict: Sit Fitzpatrick. You don’t have to put much thought into this. There’s really no reason for him to be on your roster.

RB Chris Ivory
I love Ivory this week. He’s listed as questionable with a groin injury but he’s expected to play. This is a great matchup. He should be able to plow through the Colts’ Swiss cheese rush defense. Assuming he’s healthy, he should have a monster game. He’s a great DFS option as well.

Verdict: Start Ivory. He’s going to have a big season. Ivory is a very good back with an excellent matchup.

WR Brandon Marshall
Marshall is a very good receive, nonetheless, this is a tough matchup for him. Vontae Davis is developing to one of the best corners in the NFL and help Sammy Watkins without a catch last week. Of course, Marshall is better than Watkins and Fitzpatrick is probably a better passer than Tyrod Taylor. Still, don’t expect much out Marshall on Monday night.
Verdict: Sit Marshall. Davis is becoming one of those guys you don’t want your fantasy wideouts going up against. Marshall isn’t a good enough option anymore to ignore the matchup.

WR Eric Decker
With Marshall being blanketed on the other side, things could open up for Decker. The Colts’ secondary is wildly unimpressive outside of Davis. The issue is, Decker isn’t all that impressive either.
Verdict: Sit Decker. He’s not a horrible flex option but it’s hard to trust this offense. A bad quarterback with a decent receiver isn’t an overly inspiring combination. Decker has put up solid numbers but he’s soft and average on film. I would leave him out of my lineup if I ever drafted him, which I wouldn’t.

Indianapolis Colts: Key Players

QB Andrew Luck
Luck is the best fantasy option in the league. He had a tough Week 1, but there is no chance you have a better option on your bench. The Jets’ defense is solid, nevertheless, Luck is better.
Verdict: Start Luck. He should never be on your bench. Luck on his bye week might be a better option than Fitzpatrick.

RB Frank Gore
The Colts just aren’t a team that seem to be able to sustain a strong rushing attack. Even with all the attention Luck draws, the offensive line and scheme is just awful. He only managed 31 yards on eight carries last week and the Jets have a very good defensive line. He also caught two passes for no yards. At 32 years old, Gore may be on a steep decline.
Verdict: Sit Gore. You may have to start him because you probably overdrafted him if he’s on your roster. Nonetheless, there are a lot of better options out there including little pass-catchers like Danny Woodhead, Shane Vereen and Darren Sproles in PPR leagues.

Wide Receivers
Due to T.Y. Hilton likely being a game-time decision, I’m going to do this a bit different this week and cover all the wideouts together. Despite practicing Saturday, I do not believe Hilton will play on Monday. This will leave Donte Moncrief and Andre Johnson to start. Johnson looked very slow last week. I think the Jets will put Darrelle Revis on Moncrief to neutralize him. With Antonio Cromartie likely sidelined, Buster Skrine will be on Johnson. This will leave dime back Darrin Walls to cover rookie Phillip Dorsett. Dorsett is said to be the fastest player in Miami Hurricane’s history. He is similar to Hilton and is actually a bit faster and has better hands. He will have the most upside Monday night and could explode onto the scene in prime time.
Verdict: Start Dorsett. If you’re trying to figure out which Colts WR to start, go with Dorsett. He is also the cheapest DFS option. If Hilton does start, then I would turn to Moncrief.

TE Dwayne Allen
Allen may be the most underrated tight ends in fantasy football. All he does is catch TDs. It seems unsustainable but he does it week in and week out. He had his usually stat line last week of three receptions for 17 yards and a TD.
Verdict: Start Allen. Unless you have one of the top five guys, it’s rare you’ll be starting anybody over Allen. He consistently scored TDs.

Final Score
New York: 27
Indianapolis: 34

Best Play
Jets: Chris Ivory
Colts: Andrew Luck
