Breaking News: Adam Wainwright to Possibly Undergo Tommy John Surgery

St. Louis Cardinals fans and Fantasy Baseball players across the country are facing the grim news today that ace Adam Wainwright will most likely undergo Tommy John surgery before the 2011 season even starts.

According to USA Today and other sources, general manager John Mozeliak said he believes the injury to be “significant”. More information will be available this afternoon after Wainwright meets with team doctors.

Wainwright is coming off a stellar year (20 wins, 2.42 ERA, 213 K, 1.05 WHIP), where he finished second in the Cy Young voting behind Roy Halladay.

Many could argue he was the most consistent pitcher in the whole league in 2010. Out of 33 starts, there was only 4 games where he did not pitch more than four innings. In fact, he pitched 4 complete games, with two of them being 2-hitters.

2011 would be difficult for the Cardinals without Wainwright, but they still have pitching stud Chris Carpenter, veteran Jake Westbrook and the young promising Jaime Garcia.

For the fantasy baseball world, this is a major blow and will surely shake up the rankings. TheFantasyFix.com currently has Wainwright ranked 8th overall among pitchers. See the The Fantasy Fix’s 2011 Fantasy Baseball Draft Kit for full rankings and more.
