Brian McCann Hits the 15-Day DL & Yesterday's Other Fantasy Baseball News

Easily the best catcher of 2011, Brian McCann is heading to the DL. McCann left last night’s game after straining his left oblique. You are not going to love your options off the waiver wire, but if you can brunt the lowly .213 average, J.P. Arencibia is the probably most attractive pickup at 42% owned. Also hitting in the hot weather as of late is Jarrod Saltalamacchia (13%), who is riding a 5-game hitting streak with 2 homers in that stretch.

As if the baseball god’s felt a bit bad for the loss of McCann, the Braves beat the Pirates in the 19th inning on a blown call by home plate umpire Jerry Meals. Julio Lugo scored the winning run, ending the almost 7 hour standoff and stuck to his story of not being tagged.

The Marlins beat up on Jordan Zimmerman, giving him his 2nd loss in a row with 6 runs scored. Emilio Bonifacio continued his hot streak going 2-4 with 2 runs and extending his hit-streak to 24 games. In that stretch he has scored 25 runs, 9 multi-hit games, and 17 stolen bases. Hot Damn!

Brett Talley may believe Vance Worley is ready for some regression, but Vance had no intentions of starting the downtrend just yet. Worley pitched a complete game against the Giants last night, holding them to 3 hits and 2 runs. He is now 7-1 on the year. Ryan Howard (20),  Chase Utley (7) and John Mayberry (6) provided the bombs.

CC Sabathia toyed with the Mariners, happily handing them their 17th straight loss. CC pitched 7 innings, allowed 1 hit, 1 run and K’d a whopping 14. He won his league leading 15th game.

Jose Bautista was drilled in the head by Jake Arrieta and fell to the ground for a few minutes. J-Bot seemed to be ok, but its pretty likely they will rest him for at least a game or two. Brandon Morrow got rocked by the O’s, lasting 3.1 innings and giving up 6 earned runs. Derek Lee went 4-5 and drove in 5 runs, easily his best performance in a rather dismal year.

Jered Weaver squeaked by the Tribe to win his 14th game of the season. His 1 earned run lowered his ERA to 1.79, still well below anyone in the league. Weaver has 13 straight quality starts in a row dating back to May 18th. He also has eight wins in a row.

Justin Verlander also won his 14th game of the season, although he gave up 4 runs, raising his ERA from 2.24 to 2.34. Believe it or not, Adam Dunn hit his 10th home run of the season in the first inning off Verlander. His 1-4 performance raised his average to .161.

Dustin Pedroia went 4-5 with 3 runs and raised his average back up above .300. Big Papi also went 4-5 and drove in 5 runs. Andew Miller got rocked again and although he may have a bright future with the Sox, his 5.45 ERA and 1.88 WHIP show that he may not completely be ready to consistently compete at the major league level.

Johnny Cueto gave up 6 runs to the Mets but luckily for his 1.88 ERA, all were unearned.

Chris Davis is 3-16 since being called up on Saturday.

Aramis Ramirez hit another bomb yesterday. In July he is batting .325 with 9 home runs and 22 RBI.

Albert Pujols just keeps hitting jacks. He has hit 5 in 11 games since the ASB.

Justin Upton continues his red hot streak, hitting his 18th homer of the season against the Padres. Upton is riding a 7-game hitting streak, with 3 home runs, 13 RBI and 7 runs.

Clayton Kershaw won his 12th game, beating Jhoulys Chacin and the Rockies 3-2.  Kershaw's 6 strikeouts keeps him atop the league with 173 total.
