Daily Fantasy Football Strategy: Week 1 Running Backs

Welcome back to another season of Daily Fantasy Football at DraftKings – the best DFS site on the Internet. Each week I’ll give you my top running back plays for the week based on player, matchup and price. DraftKings has mostly standard scoring, but it is point-per-reception so running backs who rack up lots of catches are slightly more valuable than most of those who don’t.

RB1

Eddie Lacy – $7,500 vs. Chicago – Lacy was a monster last year and despite his performance and great matchup against the Bears he’s priced only fifth among running back this week. In four career matchups against Chicago Lacy has four touchdowns and 408 total yards.

Jeremy Hill – $7,100 at Oakland – Until they prove us wrong we’ll continue to pick on the Raiders. According to DraftKings they are the 32nd ranked defense as they gave up over 2,400 total yards and 22 touchdowns to running backs last year. Hill finished the season on a tear, and he should continue to build on that as he’s a really talented back. In his last 10 games last season (including playoffs) Hill had 100 yards and/or a score seven times.

RB2

Justin Forsett – $6,200 at Denver – Forsett was already heavily involved in the pass game last year, and with the addition of Marc Trestman as offensive coordinator in Baltimore his role should only grow. The beauty of DFS is that even if you think Forsett’s due for a down year you can still take advantage of price and matchup every once in a while. If it’s a close game or the Ravens are ahead Forsett should be involved in both aspects on offense, and if they fall behind Forsett should be heavily targeted in the pass game. He’s probably the safest play among similarly priced running backs.

Mark Ingram – $5,600 at Arizona – I’m a believer in the Saints’ run game, and I think Ingram will really benefit from the addition of Max Unger and uncertainty regarding C.J. Spiller this week. Arizona was good against the run last year, but it faded down the stretch allowing all four of its 100-yard games in the last five weeks.

Flex

Lamar Miller – $5,500 at Washington – Washington was actually pretty good against running backs last year, but Miller was actually really good last year and he should continue to be the rock of the Dolphins’ offense. Miller was very consistent last year, and he was very involved in the passing game, which should continue for him. Miller is 18th in price despite finishing 11th in points per game among active running backs for Week 1. His value is very high here.

Benny Cunningham – $3,000 vs. Seattle – If you need a cheap option Cunningham could be your guy. He’s priced at the minimum but figures to get the start for St. Louis Sunday as Todd Gurley is still out and Tre Mason is nursing a sore hamstring. I know it’s Seattle but in a tournament game Cunningham could provide some serious bang for the buck. In eight games last year in really limited action Cunningham scored at least five PPR fantasy points. So if you make multiple lineups and need some variety Cunningham can allow you to go expensive at a couple other positions.
