Annie: "Well, I should probably tell you that I'm taking the bus because I had my driver's license revoked."

Jack: " What for?"

Annie: “Speeding.”

No, that’s not it.

I feel the need, the need for speed.” Yeah, that has a solid ring to it.

Yet, Michael Bourn gets no love this year: his ADP at Mock Draft Central is in the 50s and he has gone as late as 79.

Over the last three years, the top three base stealers are Bourn, Carl Crawford and Rajai Davis. Bourn has 174 steals, Crawford and Davis have 125. There are almost as many steals separating #1 and #2 on the list as separating numbers 2 and 22 (Bobby Abreu with 75).

Bourn is also in the top 15 in runs scored and has a respectable .283 average during that span. While Bourn is somewhat a one-trick pony, no one else has his trick (Davis doesn’t have a starting job and Crawford is injured and, potentially, sucks).

Just looking back one year, Bourn scored the 21st most runs and stole the most bases by 12. Of the top 17 base stealers last year, only five had double digit HRs, so it's rare to get elite speed with any sort of power.

In addition, there seems to be this myth that you can get cheap speed. Of the top 15 SBs guys last season, only Coco Crisp, Cameron Maybin, Emilio Bonifacio, and Ben Revere were steep discounts. In reality, no one can touch either Bourn's quantity of steals or his consistency in swiping bags.

At the early parts of a draft, you need to pay for consistency, and no base stealer has Bourn’s consistency. He’ll top 100 runs, bat at a respectable level and help you win SBs single-handedly.

He’ll provide a better return on investment than Nelson Cruz, the equally consistent former teammate Hunter Pence, Jay Bruce, Josh Hamilton, and many others. You’ll likely be able to grab him in the 4th/5th round, yet he’ll pay far better dividends!

Really, “baby we were born to run,” anyway.
