The Fantasy Baseball Daily Fix: Jose Bautista Eats Baseballs For Breakfast

The Revolt of "Joey Bats" Endures – Jose Bautista is making me second-guess his classification as a human being. "Joey Bats" made a pitcher friendly Target Field look a little league park, smacking three dingers on Sunday (two to LF, one to RF) and five for the series. He now leads the majors by a wide margin with 16 HR and is batting .368. Speechless. Again.

Dan Uggla has been terribly disappointing in the early going, but his mastery of Doc Halladay continues. He added two more hits on Sunday (scored three runs), throwing in the GW homer in the eighth inning for good measure. Uggla is now 9/22 (.409) off Halladay with 3 HR and 5 RBI. From tales of the bizarro world, he’s just 3/21 lifetime against the mighty Joe Blanton.

A number of interesting player tidbits from the Cardinals/Reds series finale:

Lance Berkman smacked his 3rd home run as a right-handed hitter in 30 at bats this season. In 2010, the switch-hitter finished with just one blast in 82 AB from the right side, and has just 45 career HR against LHP in nearly 1,400 plate appearances (one every 31 AB).

Ramon Hernandez went 2/4 with a homer (his third in two days) extending his hitting streak to ten games. During the streak he’s batting .421 (16/38) with four HR and 6 RBI. It’s hard to imagine a quieter .349 batting average being that he hasn’t had sufficient opportunities to qualify for the leader board.

Can you say “mental block”? Aroldis Chapman nearly blew a seven-run lead, walking four of the five batters he faced in the 9th inning; all four of which eventually crossed the plate. In his last 1 1/3 innings of work — get the barf bag ready — he’s walked 12 men. Astonishing, especially given his nearly untouchable repertoire on the mound.

Whispers of Chris Carpenter‘s steep decline are not unwarranted. He’s allowed 42 hits in his last 26 1/3 innings, pitching to a 6.23 ERA.

After facing the minimum through four innings, Zack Greinke hit the skids in the 5th frame. He allowed six hits and five runs in the inning, including four two-out runs. His velocity is still not back (91-92 range), but he earned his second victory despite a 6.60 ERA.

Danny Espinosa is offering up solid production in his rookie campaign (4 HR & 20 RBI), but his average has plummeted to .193 following an 0/4 showing on Sunday. He's hitting .140 in 43 May at bats, and hasn't had a multi-hit game since April 28th.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, Matt Joyce continued his tear in May with two knocks and a long ball. He’s batting .468 in 39 AB this month with 4 HR and 9 RBI. Keep in mind, he’s still just 2/15 against LHP this year.

Justin Turner is enjoying the playing time with Ike Davis on the shelf, picking up a double, HR and 5 RBI in the rubber game in Houston. His career RBI total entering the game was seven.

Break up the San Diego Padres. After scoring a total of 127 runs in their first 37 contests (3.4 per game), they piled up 24 runs in a three game set at Coors Field earning a 2-1 series victory.

Ian Kinsler went 4/4 against Ervin Santana and the rival Angels, but accounted for just a single run despite his perfect afternoon. Nevertheless, the Rangers were triumphant and moved to within a 0.5 game of first place in the AL West.

Weather continued to play havoc around the league with three postponements: KC/DET, SEA/CLEV and SF/CHC.
