Weather

May is supposed to bring flowers, but we’re currently dealing with some leftover April showers. Keep your eye on the games in St. Louis and Cincinnati as well as any of the games on the East coast.

Positional Breakdown

Starting Pitcher

Yesterday’s washouts have left with a mix and match of the probable starters today. Two of yesterday’s top options have been transferred over today and should be the highest owned pitchers today, barring any weather. Johnny Cueto has been absolutely tremendous this season and gets a nice matchup with the San Diego Padres at home. Cueto leads all of baseball in earned run average and is stranding the very few base runners he is allowing. The Padres lineup just doesn’t have enough punch to back me off of him; pay up for Cueto.

If you aren’t paying for Cueto, you should probably pay for Michael Wacha. Wacha gets to face the abysmal Cubs, who actually beat him in his last start against them. The Cubs always through out a very youthful, undisciplined lineup that is a recipe for disaster against Wacha who has been racking up the strikeouts this year. Once again, barring weather, Wacha is a top option today.

If you want to look to some other youthful arms, tip your cap to Yordano Ventura and Nathan Eovaldi as top GPP plays today.

Catcher

Jonathan Lucroy finds his way in to my lineup against most left-handed pitchers, but today is a little bit different. Today he doesn’t just face any lefty, he sees Wandy Rodriguez. Wandy is no longer the guy that dominated Minute Maid Park, he’s now just a washed up left-handed arm with a loopy breaking ball and a very hittable fastball. Wandy gives up a bunch of homeruns and Miller Park won’t be able to hold too many of the fly balls he succeeds to this Brewers offense today.

If you’re not looking to use Lucroy, keep your eye on Yan Gomes who gets another great park boost at the Rogers Centre today. Gomes homered last night in the Indians slaughtering of the Blue Jays and today figures to be another high scoring game and Gomes gets the luxury of seeing left-hander J.A. Happ. I love to target Gomes against left-handers, despite the dip in production this season.

First Basemen

David Ortiz is not first base eligible on DraftStreet but for those of you testing the waters on other sites, plug Big Papi in your lineup. The guy is absolutely red hot right now and has four homeruns in his last two games. His numbers at Target Field are absurd and his career performances against Phil Hughes are just more of a reason to roster him. There is simply no analysis for playing this guy when he’s as hot as he is. Did you watch the playoffs? Yeah, that’s what he’s capable of.

If you want to hit the salary bin, look to Mark Reynolds. Reynolds like Ortiz has monstrous power and tons of homerun upside. Add in the fact that Reynolds gets that juicy matchup with Wandy Rodriguez and I’m sold. His price lets you fit him in alongside the other big guns and stud arms today, don’t feel bad using him.

Others to consider: Matt Adams, Edwin Encarnacion and Albert Pujols.

Second Basemen

Howieeeee! Howie Kendrick has been a really pleasant surprise this year and is really doing it all for the Angels, all while playing in the shadows of Trout and Pujols. Kendrick is always a great option for me against left-handed pitchers and today he faces Erik Bedard. Bedard’s groundball percentage is below 30% and Kendrick does have some pop. Not to mention, Howie is swiping bags this year at a rate like never before. The stolen bases only add to the upside.

Matt Carpenter is absurdly cheap across the sites thanks to his lackluster start. Don’t sleep on him; this guy is a solid big league player. Carpenter provides multi-hit potential every single game and gets to face Jason Hammel today. While Hammel has been a solid starter for the Cubs this season, pesky guys who can lengthen the count against him, like Carpenter, should be solid plays.

Others to consider: Rickie Weeks and Logan Forsythe.

Third Basemen

We actually witnessed a very good Carlos Santana last night. I think we witness another good Santana tonight against J.A. Happ. Santana will flip around and hit from the right side of the plate tonight and maintain a platoon advantage. Add in the fact that he’s playing the Rogers Centre in the highest scoring game of the day and I think you’ve sold me on him. His price is still depressed thanks to his sluggish start, he should begin to turn things around.

Evan Longoria has historically been a left-handed pitching smasher and that trend will continue today. Longoria gets to face young lefty Tyler Skaggs who was actually brilliant in his last start against the Toronto Blue Jays. Longoria brings a veteran advantage to this matchup and should be able to take advantage of the young arm. Pencil him in if you can afford him.

Others to consider: Juan Francisco and Pedro Alvarez.

Shortstops

Jose Reyes has been a lot of fun since returning from the disabled list with a hamstring injury. Reyes provides a ton of upside in the leadoff spot for the Jays and I really like him today against Danny Salazar. He’s actually been off and running on the bases and has a surprising amount of pop in his short stroke at the plate. I think there are a lot of runs scored in this game today, Reyes should have a few.

I’ll go back to the well with Brewers right-handed bats and mention Jean Segura. Segura gets the platoon advantage against Wandy Rodriguez and I think he gets to hit in good spots today as this Brewers offense should have no trouble getting on track against Wandy. The disappointing part of Segura’s game has been his slot in the order, but for the price it’s tough to not pay for the upside in this matchup.

Others to consider: Mike Aviles

Outfielders

Oh boy, the outfield could be a lot of fun today. Jose Bautista, Mike Trout and Ryan Braun are all high on my homerun radar today. Each of the three gets a solid matchup and all three of them have crazy high upside. It’s going to be essentially impossible to roster all three of them, but please take your pick of one. Bautista gets the Rogers Centre and the opposing HR/FB ratio of Danny Salazar while Trout and Braun get the platoon advantage against mediocre left-handed starters. There isn’t much more to say.

Others to consider: Christian Yelich, Khris Davis, Colby Rasmus and Nick Swisher.

Top Stacks

Rogers Centre- Bautista, Rasmus, Francisco, Santana and Swisher.

Miller Park- Alvarez, Braun, Lucroy, Segura.
