Rotoinfo.com provides excellent updates as lineups roll in. I’ve got some fun choices below – read along and enjoy.
DraftKings.com Team of the Day:
Kris Medlen | P | Braves | $9,100 – The Pirates strike out. A lot. Medlen left his last start with a calf injury, but looks to be healthy. Medlen is 2-1 lifetime against the Pirates with a 3.04 ERA. And looking for the win, the Pirates are just above .500 on the road, while the Braves are 18-7 at home. We should see a win from Medlen as well as a handful of strikeouts.
Tyler Chatwood | P | Rockies | $6,100 – I’m taking a risk here so that we can load up on offense. Chatwood has been terrific over his last three starts with two wins and 18 strikeouts in 17 2/3 innings.
Jonathan Lucroy | C | Brewers | $4,100 – Lucroy’s luck has turned for the better this week with a 1.397 OPS over the last seven days and 1.077 over the last 14 days. He gets the bonus of facing a lefty (Tommy Milone) who struggles on the road generally. He’s also a career 320/354/543/898 hitter in his career against left handers.
Paul Goldschmidt | 1B | Diamondbacks| $4,700– Goldschmidt has an OPS 160 points on the road. Read that again. 160 points higher on the road! He’s on the road on Monday and has been hot (1.140 OPS in his last seven days).
Matt Carpenter | 2B | Cardinals | $3,600 – Carpenter hits lead off and I like to get as many hitters in the first four spots in lineups as I can. They are almost always guaranteed to get one more plate appearance than other hitters. He’s a much better hitter against righties and he gets one on Monday.
Jedd Gyorko | 3B | Padres | $3,700 – We needed another cheap guy with all of these high-priced studs and Gyorko is our man. He gets to face emergency starter Stephen Fife on Monday. Gyorko’s had four double digit scores in his last ten days on DraftKings.
Troy Tulowitzki | SS | Rockies | $4,900 – Tulo is 5 for 9 against the Reds’ starter Bronson Arroyo with two homeruns. He’s also had solid success at Great American Ballpark (1.147 OPS over 71 plate appearances). Finally, he’s got a 1.070 OPS over his last 14 days.
Gerardo Parra | OF | Diamondbacks| $3,400 – Parra also is likely to be in the leadoff spot on Monday and has gone 3 for 6 against Cards starter Lance Lynn. He’s also been hot with a 1.198 OPS over the last seven days. He’s a better hitter against righties (130 points higher in OPS).
Carlos Gonzalez | OF | Rockies | $5,200 – Gonzalez is 7-14 against Bronson Arroyo and has also been on fire over the last couple of weeks with a 1.006 OPS over the last 14 days. He’s a much better hitter against righties(126 points higher in OPS over his career).
Matt Holliday | OF | Cardinals | $5,000 – Holliday has three hits against Diamondbacks starter Trevor Cahill. All three hits are HRs. That’s enough for me.
If you are looking for stacking options I’d look at the Rockies against the Reds.
The First Pitch:
The Yasel Puig era is about to start in Dodgertown. Puig is to be recalled and will likely be in the lineup in CF for the Dodgers on Monday. Puig impressed during spring training and carried that over to his time at AA mashing at a .982 OPS clip through the first 40 games. His stay may be short if Kemp’s time on the DL is short. However, he’s got a chance to establish himself and give the Dodgers the flexibility to trade (or perhaps give the Alex Rios treatment to) Andre Ethier. He should be fun to watch and should be acquired in all leagues.
Staying in Los Angeles, it looks like Chris Capuano will be scratched for Monday’s start and Stephen Fife will get the call.
Domonic Brown is for real. He’s a guy I’d “buy high” on at this point in the season. He poked another homerun out of the park on Sunday and he now has 16 dingers. Cliff Lee was effective in garnering 11 strikeouts and Antonio Bastardo stepped in for ill closer Jonathan Papelbon to secure the save (though not without drama).
Chris Davis hit his major league leading 20th home run as the Orioles mounted a comeback against the mighty Detroit Tigers at home. Kevin Gausman was excellent against a difficult lineup as he got 12 ground ball outs and struck out four in six innings. Jim Johnson picked up another save (number 18) and looks to be back on track.
Garrett Jones crushed this ball. Crushed it. It was off Jonathan Broxton, but it still counts the same as if it came off a real major league pitcher. The Pirates came back against Dusty Baker’s ill-conceived bullpen usage as he failed to use Aroldis Chapman against Garrett Jones who struggles against lefties. Travis Snider had the game-winning single for the Pirates who are looking to finally finish over .500 for the first time since Reconstruction. Jeanmar Gomez left the game early with forearm tightness. There has been no update on his situation.
The Nationals fell below .500 today with their loss to the Atlanta Braves. They aren’t hitting at all and the back end of their rotation is shaky at best. The next couple of weeks will be important to see if the Nats can right the ship or if they will struggle to qualify for the playoffs.
Hector Ambriz picked up his second save of the season for the Astros as Jose Veras was rested again. He’s the clear handcuff in the near term, but Josh Fields is still intriguing.
Dexter Fowler homered twice and continues to sparkle this season wherever he is in the lineup.
