Rotoinfo.com provides excellent updates as lineups roll in. I’ve got some fun choices below – read along and enjoy.
Clay Buchholz | P | Red Sox | $10,900 – Buchholz is using a spitball (according to Jack Morris and Dirk Hayhurst). He hasn’t been caught yet. Keep riding the spitball against the Twins.
Trevor Cahill | P | Diamondbacks| $8,100 Cahill is 4-0 in 7 starts with 34 strikeouts in 44 1/3 IP against the Dodgers. The Dodgers are coming off a sweep at the hands of the San Francisco Giants and could be ripe for the picking with nagging injuries throughout their lineup.
I would also consider Cliff Lee, Jeremy Hellickson, and Nick Tepesch (good cheap option should you choose to go big elsewhere) in this second spot behind Buchholz.
Jose Molina | C | Rays | $2,500 – Jose Molina is the poorest hitting Molina brother. However, he’s 9-24 in his career against Toronto starter Mark Buehrle. You need to go cheap in some places and this is one.
Paul Goldschmidt | 1B | Diamondbacks | $4,500– Goldschmidt is the perfect player for today. He’s been hot lately and he’s got a great matchup as he’s 9 for 12 with two HRs against Dodger starter Chris Capuano.
Dan Uggla | 2B | Braves | $3,900 – Uggla has two HRs in 18 career ABs against Bronson Arroyo and is hitting .333. Brandon Phillips is another option here, but Uggla is cheaper.
Josh Donaldson | 3B | A’s | $3,400 – I can’t pass up a player this hot at a price like this irrespective of his matchup. He does have the added bonus of facing Ubaldo Jimenez.
Sean Rodriguez | SS | Rays | $3,500 – Yunel Escobar is out for a few days and the Rays are facing a lefty on Monday which means Rodriguez should be in the lineup. He has gone 4-7 in his career against Bronson Arroyo.
Jose Bautista | OF | Blue Jays | $4,700 – Bautista has four hits in eleven ABs against Jeremy Hellickson. A single, double, triple and HR. A career cycle. That seems like it’s worth a start.
Hunter Pence | OF | Padres | $3,900 – It seems clear that Pence is an alien based on research done here. That’s enough for me. Well, he’s also warm picking up four RBIs last night.
Yoenis Cespedes| OF | A’s | $4,800 – This is more of a hunch as Cespedes is rounding into form and Ubaldo isn’t very good.
If you are looking for stacking options I’d look at the Padres (and assume that Kyle Blanks gets the start against the lefty). Wade LeBlanc has been awful so far this year.
The First Pitch:
One Cy Young winner likely heads to the DL while a potential Cy Young winner strikes out 14 in a no-decision. Let’s get to the highlights from Sunday.
San Francisco Giants 4 Los Angeles Dodgers 3
The Giants finished a sweep of their hated rivals the Dodgers on Sunday night behind Matt Cain and Hunter Pence. Hopefully, you took my advice and acquired Matt Cain this week. Cain’s luck will even out and you should be the beneficiary. Cain picked up his first win of the year by lasting 7 1/3 innings, striking out four and walking three. The Giants bullpen tried desperately to blow the game, but it was unable to complete the task as Jean Machi slammed the door in the eighth and Sergio “Slider” Romo finished off the ninth. Hunter Pence drove in all four Giants’ runs and as a result he ends up on my DraftKings team. On the Dodgers side, Dee Gordon picked up his third stolen base in two games and even walked and drove in a run (on a very Dee Gordon hit – a slap hit to the second baseman).
Texas Rangers 4 Boston Red Sox 3
In other broom-related news, the Rangers completed a sweep of the surprising Red Sox as Yu Darvish struck out 14 Sox, but was saddled with a no-decision. Darvish needed 127 pitches to get through seven innings so it will be interesting to see how he recovers (and if the Rangers give him a day off). There’s a reason I picked him as my AL CY Young winner at the start of the season. He’s got his first season in the States under his belt and he’s feeling more comfortable pitching in the majors. The sky is the limit for Darvish and he’s on a team that should go far.
Jon Lester was effective for the Red Sox as he struck out seven over six innings while giving up three runs. David Ortiz extended his hitting streak to 25 games (across two seasons) and noted speedster David Ross stole his first (of many I’m sure) base of the season. He now has two SBs in his 12 year career – one last year and now one this year.
Miami Marlins 14 Philadelphia Phillies 2
Have we seen the last of Roy Halladay for a while (for the season)? It sure seems that way. He complained of shoulder soreness (felt first after his April 24 start) after this start on Sunday. He got seven outs. He gave up nine runs. He doesn’t seem to be very god at the moment as his ERA ballooned to 8.65. Sure, his xFIP is 4.13 and he’s got an unheard of 28.1% HR/FB rate, but there is something quite wrong with ole Doc. If you can deal him for anything, feel free to. In redraft leagues, I’d probably dump him. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see him need surgery of some sort and be lost for an extended period.
On the Marlins side, who is this Kevin Slowey guy? He has 36 punch outs in 44 2/3 IP. He won’t win many games while on the Marlins, but if he keeps this up he could be trade bait down the road. Light hitting SS Adeiny Hechavarria had seven RBIs, ageless Juan Pierre stole his 11th base of the season, not-ready-for-primetime OF Marcell Ozuna had four hits, drove in four runs and scored four runs and Justin Ruggiano clubbed two home runs. It was a rout all the way for the Fish.
Some other notes from Sunday’s games:
- Justin Verlander had a no-hitter going for a while against the Houston Astros. However, it was determined that it would not count since the Astros are so wretched so Verlander gave up his bid and finished seven strong innings with nine strikeouts.
- Andy Dirks picked up four hits in that game as well and looks to be over the slight knee injury he had earlier. He’s got a mix of power and speed that could lead to a 15-15 season. He’s a solid buy low candidate in deeper leagues.
- Brandon Morrow struck out eight Mariners over eight innings. I’m not sure what to make of it, but I’d still tread carefully. His stuff is outstanding, but he can’t seem to get everything moving in the correct direction.
- Brian McCann comes off the DL for the Braves on Monday making a mess of the legend of Evan Gattis. Gattis looks like he’ll get a couple of starts a week (most likely against lefthanders) and will still have some value in deeper leagues.
- Jake Peavy is likely headed to the DL and Hector Santiago looks like he might get to stay in the rotation even when John Danks returns.
