2015 Fantasy Baseball, Week 2 Tools of the Trade: Mookie Betts’ Value On The Rise

TheFantasyFix.com’s “Tools of the Trade” is a unique guide for owners to use while attempting to make an even trade with their league-mates in a standard 12-team mixed, 5×5 head-to-head or rotisserie redraft league.

The values present in this guide are simply the basis for a trade. A full-blown analysis of each team’s strengths and weaknesses are essential prior to proposing or accepting a trade offer.

How to use the guide: Ideally, owners will agree to a trade that will aid both sides and stay within $2-3 of each other in a one-for-one and $4-5 in a multi-player deal, according to our chart. Players not noted should be considered $1 players.

Here’s the chart:

Trading isn’t easy. It’s fun, but not easy. Remember that you don’t have to “win” the trade in order to pull the trigger. If you’re improving your team, then you should make the deal.

This week we’re taking a look at the electric Red Sox outfielder, Mookie Betts. Betts is quickly capturing the hearts of baseball fans around the country with his incredible play making ability with both the lumber and the leather. Our friend Owen Watson at FanGraphs posted some beautiful GIFs from the events that played out yesterday at Fenway Park, for your viewing pleasure here. He’s slashing just .233/.294/.467 with two home runs, four runs scored, six runs batted in and two stolen bases in his first six games, but it’s the glimpse of excellence and the passion of the play of Betts’ that is causing those without shares of the 22-year-old to fork over some of their best assets to acquire him.

I polled Twiter this morning to see if Betts was on the move in any leagues. Here are some of the responses:

Not a bad haul if you believe in a Chris Davis bounce back is on the horizon. But through six games since returning from suspension, Davis is .217/.280/.391 with just one home run, zero walks and a 40% strikeout rate. The season is a marathon, so the power numbers could very well come back, but I’m not betting that Davis finishes the ’15 season as a top ten first baseman. I’d prefer Betts in this scenario if my team is okay in the power department, but if a team is lacking in the same, I wouldn’t blame someone for making this deal.

Well, this may be a bit extreme. Or not..

Probably didn’t sound all that bad for him at the start of the season, but already regrets that decision. Not an awful move if you needed a closer, but did he get Betances or Miller? And why not wait and pluck one from the waiver wire during the season at that point since you came out of the draft a bit short at that position? Meh…

All that said, I’m holding for Betts now unless I receive a significant piece that fills some holes for my squad. While Betts may not be a .300 hitter going forward, Steamer suggests that he’ll post roughly 13 homers and steal 29 bags the rest of the way.

    Hey,
got a trade question for you:
    Brandon Moss for Miguel Castro.
    I have Moss.
I play in a points league.
    Holds count.
Bullpen now is : Closers: Grilli/Cischeck
Holds guys and Closer Hopefuls: Cecil,
Betances, Giles, and handcuff Jim Johnson.
What do you think based on trade values.
I think if I buy Castro I buy some more saves and lots of uncertainty. Which is what I have now. What do you guys think ?

I’d pass on that deal. Plenty of guys you could grab on the wire for holds while speculating saves.

What do you think of this trade. I have excess in stolen bases and already three closers in my 15 team 5×5 roto league. I have plawecki at catcher, Perkins, chapman, and Britton as closers. Deal entails:

I give: plawecki, betts, Britton, garza
I get: Suzuki (catcher), n walker, kimbrel, Rodney

    Thoughts?

I need batting average desperately in my league, i am overloaded with power And saves. I can’t seem to find a fair trade that gets what I need without giving up too much. I am debating a trade involving some of these guys From my team.

Edwin Encarnacion, craig Kimbrel, Zach britton, mookie betts, jd martinez.

I want either Michael Brantley or Mike Trout From the other team. Thoughts?
