What’s not mentioned below: Just one game left to be played on this Sunday, as the Los Angeles Dodgers are hosting the Chicago Cubs on ESPN’s ‘Sunday Night Baseball’. The New York Mets snuck out a close victory today against the Boston Red Sox, winning the game 5-4. Michael Cuddyer went 3-3 for the Mets; including the game deciding RBI single in the seventh inning. The Toronto Blue Jays launched four home runs today in their 9-2 win over the Detroit Tigers. Josh Donaldson and Edwin Encarnacion were among those who went deep in the win. The Jays are the first team to have three players with at least 30 home runs before the end August since the 2008 Phillies (via ESPN Stats & Info). The Cleveland Indians were all over Jared Weaver today, tagging him for eight runs in the team’s win over the Angels, who fall to .500. Mike Trout went 4-4 in the loss, as he was just a home run away from hitting for the cycle. Outfielder Abraham Almonte’s grand slam off Weaver was the key for the Indians in the win. James Shields limited the Philadelphia Phillies to just one run over his seven innings of work, striking out eight to lead the Padres to a 9-4 victory. Matt Kemp and Justin Upton both went deep for San Diego.
IF YOU ONLY READ ONE THING…
Texas Rangers’ starter Derek Holland had easily his best start of the season this afternoon, tossing a complete game shutout in the team’s 6-0 win over the Baltimore Orioles. Holland gave up just three hits, one being a double to Adam Jones, while striking out 11 and walking none. This was just Holland’s third start of the season thanks to a shoulder injury that kept him sidelined for the majority of the season, but the Rangers have to be thrilled with what they saw from their 28-year-old southpaw. Through his three starts this year, Holland has allowed six runs over 21 1/3, good for a 2.82 ERA. With a rotation fronted by Cole Hamels, Holland, and hopefully Yu Darvish at some point next year, the Rangers seem to have the pitching that could potentially lead them into the playoffs in 2016. That being said, let’s not forget that they currently own the second Wild Card spot after their three game sweep of the Orioles. The Rangers tallied 11 hits today in the win, including multi-hit games from Elvis Andrus, Adrian Beltre, and Delino DeShields. Along with going 2-3 with an RBI and a run scored, Andrus also swiped two bases in the win, bringing his season total to 14. Derek Holland will look to keep things rolling as he takes on the Angels in his next start on Saturday.
JUST AS WE EXPECTED…
The New York Yankees completed their sweep of the Atlanta Braves this afternoon, exploding for 20 runs in the 20-6 rout. There were plenty of questions for the Yankees heading into the series, including whether or not A-Rod would start any of the three games, and whether or not first baseman Mark Teixeira would return from his ailing shin injury. Neither happened. Nonetheless, the Bronx Bombers were able to outscore the Braves 36-11 in the series. Nathan Eovaldi was on the bump for the Yankees, and he took home the win despite giving up five runs over his five innings of work, walking two while striking out seven. Eovaldi picked up his 14th win of the season, though he has the offense rather than his own work to thank for that. Eovaldi has been the Yankees best pitcher since the all-star break, and go-figure that the one day he doesn’t have his best stuff, the recently anemic Yankees offense comes alive. Eovaldi’s 14-2 record is good for a .875 winning percentage, best in the MLB. Second baseman Stephen Drew went 4-4 with a home run and four RBI in the game for the Yankees, while Jacoby Ellsbury and Chase Headley also went deep for the club. Julio Teheran was lit up like a Christmas tree in his start for the Braves, letting up eight earned runs on nine hits over 4.2 innings of work. The nightmare of a season continues for Teheran, as his ERA now sits at 4.62 on the season. Via ESPN States & Info: the Yankees have scored 20 runs or more on the road in two games this season; the last time they did that was 1939, when they did it three times. Braves’ first baseman Freddie Freeman went 2-3 with an RBI and two walks in the loss.
BUT WE DIDN’T SEE THIS COMING…
Don’t look now, but the Minnesota Twins sit just a game and a half back out of the second Wild Card spot in the American League. Their latest win came this afternoon against the Houston Astros, taking home a 7-5 victory behind Ervin Santana’s gem. Santana went seven innings, giving up no runs across six hits and striking out ten batters. This start was night-and-day with his last one, which lasted just 2.2 innings after he gave up five runs to the Tampa Bay Rays. Despite the dominance, Santana’s ERA still sits at an ugly 5.40 on the season. Today’s day ends in a ‘Y’ so that means Miguel Sano hit a home run. The home run was the rookie’s 13th of the season, and had the Twins not waited until July to call him up, he would one of the clear favorites to win Rookie of the Year. There is still some cause for concern for the 22-year-old third baseman, as he has struck out 74 times in 171 at-bats, which is a little absurd. Astros’ second baseman Jose Altuve collected four hits in the win, including his 11th home run of the season in the ninth inning. Lance McCullers gave up three runs over six innings for the Astros, walking four and striking out six.
