Scouting the 2013 MLB Draft: Loganville, Georgia’s Clint Frazier
Two separate things are true about Loganville, GA outfielder Clint Frazier: he is, almost, universally rated as a top 5 prospect in this year’s draft and he is, in my opinion, very underrated.
Everyone in the baseball draft media seems like to like Clint Frazier, but no one loves him. Until now.
I’m here to profess my love for Clint Frazier.
He swings hard. He runs hard. He throws hard. Perhaps more importantly than any of that, he plays hard. Clint Frazier is an elite athlete with outstanding tools and a great motor. I’ll take that combination any day of the week.
Frazier is occasionally knocked for his lack of physical projection. Listed *cough cough* at 6-foot-1, 190 pounds Frazier is not a big hulking presence…but who cares? He’s already strong enough to toss kegs over a wall and place giant stones on random staircases that lead nowhere. Beyond the ability to participate in the next World’s Strongest Man Who Places Items Inconveniently contest Frazier has functional baseball strength. His arms are the size of most men’s calves, and his Popeye-like physique comes without the aid of performance enhancing spinach.
A lean, fast-twitch athlete, Frazier developed his man-muscles early; lack of projection, in his case, should not be viewed as a bad thing. A borderline plus-plus runner, Frazier has run to first in 4.2 seconds from the right-hand side and was clocked in the low 6.4s in the 60 yard dash. That speed should make him a threat to steal 30+ bags.
Defensively, Frazier has the raw foot speed and arm strength to be an elite centerfielder. Capable of throwing 95-97 MPH off a mound, opposing runners should think twice about taking an extra bag off Frazier. However, the defensive ability has yet to match up to Frazier’s prodigious physical abilities. An infielder until this past year, Frazier is still learning the finer points of reading fly balls but experience should make him a considerable asset with the glove.
Even if Frazier turns into a +10 defensive centerfielder, that likely won’t be the best part of his game. Clint Frazier can hit. Boy howdy, can he hit!
Frazier has pure hitting ability in his hands that few people can match, even fewer his age. His trigger, load, strength and bat speed are all drool-worthy. Frazier’s swing is aggressive; much different than an approach being too aggressive. He doesn’t just want to make contact with the ball, he wants to kill it. Frazier swings like the ball said something about his momma. Don’t nobody talk bad about Momma Frazier.
As a rising senior Clint Frazier broke out at the Under Armor All-American Game in Wrigley. With a flick of the wrist, Frazier banged one off the ivy. Yet to understand how to fully incorporate his lower half into his swing, Frazier still nearly took a ball out of a big league park to left-center.
Not as finished a product as San Diego 3B Kris Bryant nor as imposing a physical specimen as fellow Georgian Austin Meadows, Clint Frazier has a higher upside than any position player in the draft. There is, of course, a chance he doesn’t click but it’s worth betting on a player with elite athleticism and Bryce Harper’s competitive streak.
Frazier has a chance to hit .300 with 30+ home runs and steals while patrolling centerfield. In other words, a true superstar. A ginger Andrew McCutchen. I love him. And so should you.
