2011 Fantasy Baseball Daily Fix: Beltran to the Giants, Santana No-Hits Indians & Other News

Carlos Beltran has been traded to the Giants for a package of players including pitcher Zack Wheeler.  Beltran has enjoyed a bit of a renaissance this year… can anyone say contract year?  But truthfully, he was the best hitter on the market (.290, 15 HR, 66 RBI) and the Giants had to do something to improve that offense.  With Beltran as a switch hitter, he'll be the first Giant since Barry Bonds to threaten McCovey Cove on a consistent basis.  Wheeler is only 21, with a penchant for the strikeout (averaging 10 per 9 innings pitched) and the Giants certainly have pitching to spare.  He was the 6th pick of the 2009 draft and was rated the 55th best prospect by Baseball America, but he is only in High-A ball and a few years away from the majors.

Brian McCann is out a couple weeks with oblique injury.

Erwin Santana came through with a no-no against the Indians, albeit the Tribe did score a run (last time a no-hitter was thrown and the other team scored a run was Darryl Kile against the Mets in 1993).  Little known fact, since the Angels joined the league in 1961, no American League team has had more no-hitters with 9.

Colby Rasmus was traded to the Blue Jays in a three-team deal that also included Edwin Jackson.  As we have seen in the past, the move from the AL to the NL is often a good thing (Hurray Edwin Jackson), but the opposite is true when going from the NL to the AL (Boo Colby) and especially true when joing the AL East.

Rickie weeks suffered a gruesome ankle injury.  The extent of his injury is unknown, but we know that it is not broken.

In rather unexciting trade news, ex-Nationals Bill Rhinehart and Chris Manno to Cincinatti for outfielder Jonny Gomes.  Fantasy Impact?  Does anyone really care?

Dustin Pedroia extended his hitting streak to 24 games in the Red Sox 12-5 victory. He is only 1 game behind Emilio Bonifacio's 25 games.

Justin Upton burst into flames this week, .565 avg, 3HR, 12 RBI.  Another great week in what could be a .300, 30, 100 season for the younger Upton brother.

No big names pitching today, but a few under the radar guys having very good years: Ryan Vogelsong (comeback player of the year), Shaun Marcum, Jaime Garcia.  The biggest name is Josh Beckett who looks just like the young man who won the World Series for the Marlins from what seems like 10 years ago.

Someone, break-up the A's offense, since the all-star break they are second in the league in batting average with a .308 clip.  At the time of this writing they had just put up a 9 spot in the 4th inning and lead the Rays, 12-0.  Godzilla is leading the way with 3 hits and 5 RBI.  The epitome of too-little, too-late.

This day in baseball history:  In 1993, Ken Griffey, Jr., tied a Major League record by homering in his eighth consecutive game.  In 1989, Vince Coleman is caught stealing end his record of 50 consecutive stolen bases.

Finally, the Mariners put a halt to their 17-game losing streak stopping the Yankees no less, 9-2.
