2011 Fantasy Baseball Daily Fix: Derek Jeter Closes In On The 3,000 Hit Milestone

Derek Jeter

Coming off of memorial day it seems appropriate to mention that on this date in 1917, Hank Gowdy became the first baseball player to enlist in WWI.

Keep an eye on this: Dan Haren hurt his back during a throwing session and may miss a start.

Derek Jeter is only 16 hits away from his 3000th hit AND being moved to number 8 in the order. In that same game, Nick Swisher delivered the big blow against his former team…a three-run home run that propelled the Yankees to a sweep of the A's.

On this first day of June, let’s look back at the stop statistical leaders from May and hand out some awards:

“The girl who every guy could’ve had in high school who turned out to be a Victoria’s Secret Supermodel” Award. Also known as the Marisa Miller Award (not that Marisa was readily available in high school, I know for a fact she was not, but I did not go to school with any other supermodel). Batting Average: Matt Joyce (.414). Why this award, because everyone in your league had the opportunity to grab him earlier in the season, and only one team was smart enough to act.

The “Karate Kid Strong Finish” Award: Home Runs – 12 by Jay Bruce. Why this award, because just like Daniel finishing off Johnny with the crane technique, Bruce closed with 6 home runs over his last 10 games to narrowly edge out Jose Bautista (11)

The “Karate Kid Part II” Award: Runs Batted In – 33 by Jay Bruce. Why this award, because of the same strong finish (19 RBI’s over his last 10 games), just different country, er…category.

The “Justin Bieber” Award: OPS – 1.267 by Jose Bautista. Why this award, because Jose Bautista topped out in a category that did not exist 15 years ago.

The “The Three Kings” Award: Wins – 5 by Jair Jurrjens, Yovani Gallardo, Daniel Hudson. Why this award, because there are three of them and it has the word “three” in the title.

The “Charlie Sheen” Award: Earned Run Average – 1.00 by Josh Beckett. Why this award, because Josh Beckett’s ERA is equal to the number of minutes of fame remaining on Sheen’s clock.

The “Teen Wolf ‘Win In The End'” Award: Saves – 11 by JJ Putz and Leo Nunez. Why this award, because if they pitch the ninth, you are going to win.

The “Justin Bieber II” Award: WHIP – .65 by Josh Collmenter (4 Games started, 6 games total). Why this award, same reasoning as the Justin Bieber Award.

With the news that Buster Posey is out for the year, let’s hope that his career does not take the negative turn taken by Ray Fossee after this collision with Pete Rose.
