2011 Fantasy Baseball Daily Fix: Fausto Carmona Bounces Back Against Boston & Much More

Glenn Beck leaves Fox. Donald Trump is running for President. Japan has another earthquake.

Oh yes my friends, the world is definitely ending and all I know is that I better get in one last baseball season before Armageddon hits. I’d also like to request that the NFL not have a lockout, since this may very well be our last chance.

So my number one question of the week is – will the Federal Shutdown affect my Fantasy League?

Apparently Ben Roethlisberger isn’t living with his fiancee because of religious beliefs. I was under the impression it was to keep the girlfriends and the fiancee separate. Hmm Big Ben may be onto to something here…

Sophomore stud Marlin Mike Stanton was aiming to return from a hamstring injury today, but made a guest appearance last night striking out in the 9th.

Also returning today is
Jose Bautista who has taken a personal leave since Tuesday. Fantasy owners in head-to-head match-ups have greatly missed the big bat and hot start.

Thursday was a monster day for key pitcher match-ups and top-notch performances, further proof that balls are not being juiced.

In an absolute pitchers duel, the Red Sox lost their 6th straight and are still winless in 2011. Fausto Carmona in his first game against the White Sox gave up 10 runs, but yesterday shutdown Beantown on 7 strong and only 2 hits. Wouldn’t it be great if Fausto could just decide whether he was a good pitcher or not? It would save thousands of wasted waiver wire moves over the course of the season. Jon Lester on the other side pitched a gem as well, giving up only 3 hits, zero runs and nine K’s.

Boston is not the only team that can’t get their act together, Tampa Bay is winless as well. And of course, Baltimore is in the top spot at 5-1 in the AL East. Wait what?? Again, further proof the world as we know it is ending.

In another battle, the A’s Trevor Cahill edged out Ricky Romero in a 2-1 win. Both pitchers in each of their first two games have given up only one run per contest.

J.P. Arencibia who blasted two home runs opening day has yet to drive in another run. This kid has the potential to hit 25 home runs, so sit tight.

Mental-case A.J. Burnett pitched good enough to get the win over Francisco Liriano and now is 2-0. We’ll see if the therapy sessions have helped.

As further proof that Made in America is better than Made in Japan, Tsuyoshi Nishioka broke his left fibula when Nick Swisher slid into him at 2B. No timetable yet for his return. Matt Tolbert will play second in his absence.

Shaun Marcum redeemed himself (1-1) in his 2nd start and got the win over Tommy Hanson who is now 0-2. After his 4-run opening day blowup, John Axford has cooled down or should I say heated up, and pitched the last three games without giving up a run (2 for saves).

Edwin Jackson apparently really loves his new home in Chicago. Jackson pitched 8 innings, giving up 4 hits, 1 run and 13 Ks! Edwin apparently didn’t care that he was going up against last year’s AL Cy Young runner up, David Price, who is now 0-2. Was Price over-pitched in 2010 (he had an 80 inning increase from 2009 to 2010)?

After those 5 delicious pitching match-ups on Thursday, the only real one to watch for today is Tim Hudson vs Cliff Lee.

Carlos Santana played 1B last Sunday and manager Manny Acta has said he does not have a specific number of games Santana will play first base. Keep an eye on Santana in the 2nd half of the season and if he can accumulate enough starts at 1B to be eligible at both positions. This of course would be a major boost in value.

Chase Utley who was supposed to start jogging this week is behind schedule but at least taking ground balls. If Utley can get back into playing shape by the All-Star break he could single handedly change your line-up. Here’s to hoping you drafted him late!

According to CBS Sports Zack Greinke was cleared to throw a bullpen session and is on track for a late April or early May return.
