2011 Fantasy Baseball Rookie Report Week 16: Alex Cobb Partially Holds Yanks In Check

Alex Cobb (see credits below)

SP- ALEX COBB (TAMPA BAY) – Alex made his first start since June 18th for the Rays last night and held down the Bronx Bombers for 6+ innings before his bullpen blew the lead. Cobb is 2-0 with a 3.09 ERA for the season. He sports a 90+ mph fastball and a great sinker. He has had some troubles with bases on balls but otherwise has been solid in his brief major league stint. Cobb's value is based on the health of Wade Davis and the rest of the Ray's staff. He is worthy of being on your roster providing that he will get a chance to pitch.

SP- SCOTT DIAMOND (MINNESOTA) – Diamond is the first Binghamton University graduate to play in the major leagues. Binghamton, NY  just happens to be my home town. In his debut last night, Scott went unscathed for four innings but eventually would make a couple mistakes as Cleveland tagged him with a loss. He ended the game with a 4.26 ERA , striking out one batter in 6 1/3 innings. Diamond who was called up to make a spot start for injured Scott Baker will most likely get one 1-2 more starts before being sent back down. He is not worthy of a roster spot right now.

1B- FREDDIE FREEMAN (ATLANTA) – It took awhile for Freeman to adjust to the majors but now we are seeing the Braves patience paying off. In the month of July, Freddie ranks in the top five in all of baseball in home runs and RBI. His season totals are also impressive with a .278/14/50 mark. He is owned in 97% of ESPN leagues but I am still seeing him available in CBS leagues. Grab the 21 year old if he is still available and ride the streak.

SS- ZACK COZART (CINCINNATI) – Cozart has been a splendid surprise for the Red’s since his call up in early July. He currently is hitting .379 with a home run and two RBI in 29 AB’s. Zack who was once regarded as the top defensive shortstop in college baseball, has questions regarding his offensive usefullness at the big league level. For now he is proving he can handle the major league pitching but I do not expect it to continue. Stay away unless you absolutely have no other choice at the position.

3B- LONNIE CHISENHALL (CLEVELAND) – Chisenhall, a former 2008 first round pick has struggled at the major league level so far this year. He has a .214/1/3 line in 47 AB's. Lonnie was recently hit in the face by a pitch from Toronto's Carlos Villaneuva only July 7th and you sometimes wonder how much of an issue that will have on the psyche of a young player. I like this kid and in time I think he will provide decent fantasy numbers but now is not that time. Not worth owning in any league format.

OF- MIKE TROUT (LOS ANGELES ANGELS) – Major League baseball’s top prospect has made it to the major leagues. The 19 year old Trout got the call up on earlier this month due to injuries in the Angel’s outfield. In 24 AB’s he is hitting .125 with just one RBI. All the tools are there for him to succeed and all he will need is some playing time at the MLB level. He should continue to see regular AB’s for another week or so then who knows from there. Stash him on your roster if you have room.

BRYCE HARPER WATCH- Harper is struggling since his call up to AA Harrisburg. In nine games he owns a .194 BA with two RBI's and no home runs.
