2011 Fantasy Football, Team Preview & Auction Values: Peyton Manning & The Indianapolis Colts
That's never been a question but the ironman is still recovering from offseason neck surgery and his status for the start of the season is in doubt. So stay tuned before determining the value of Manning and his backup, Curtis Painter, as well as the entire receiving corps that takes a hit if Manning is not able to go.
The running game could also be affected – perhaps in a positive manner with more carries – if Manning is out, but tough to get too excited about Joseph Addai or Donald Brown.
QUARTERBACK: Peyton Manning ($22): That price is a bargain, but it's tough to go much higher for a 35-year old quarterback with a neck injury. Even if he is back for the start of the season, the risk for injury during the year seems higher than ever for Manning. If he slips in your draft or goes cheap in an auction, take him and hope for the best, but you can't count on him like you did in the past.
QUARTERBACK: Curtis Painter ($1): Like every Colts backup quarterback for the past decade, there is no idea what he can do because Manning never misses a start. However, with the Colts receivers, Painter will become a viable fantasy starter if Manning does miss a game, but it is just hard to believe that will happen.
RUNNING BACK: Joseph Addai ($5); Missed half of last season but ran for 495 yards and four touchdowns, which even doubled over a whole season doesn't excite you much as a fantasy owner. He hasn't run for over 1,000 yards in the past three seasons and hasn't played a full 16 games since his rookie year in 2006, so don't expect a lot.
RUNNING BACK: Donald Brown ($1): He's the backup to Addai and didn't show much last year when he started eight games and averaged less than four yards per carry while scoring just twice.
WIDE RECEIVER: Reggie Wayne ($23): Obviously his value depends a lot on Manning, so drop him in the rankings if Peyton isn't ready to go. You always expect Wayne to slow down, but he exceeded 1,000 yards for the seventh straight year and hasn't missed a start in eight years, so his production and health remains strong.
WIDE RECEIVER: Austin Collie ($9): Was on his way to breakout season before a concussion last season limited him to nine game when he totaled 649 yards and eight scores. He's often overlooked in Indy's offense, but has 15 touchdowns in two years despite starting only 11 games.
WIDE RECEIVER: Pierre Garcon ($5): If Manning is healthy, his No. 3 wide receiver is fantasy relevant and last year Garcon had 784 yards and six touchdowns. Collie's return will cut into that a bit, but Garcon remains a factor if Manning is throwing the ball.
TIGHT END: Dallas Clark ($11): He took down a lot of fantasy teams last year when he suffered a season-ending wrist injury in the sixth game. He was on his way to another 1,000-yard season and double-digit touchdown total before the injury and he could reach those levels again this year. But Manning's uncertainty also drops Clark's value, although Painter might be more likely to look for short passes to the tight end if he is forced into the lineup.
TIGHT END: Jacob Tamme ($3): Tough to put such a low price on a tight end who had 631 yards and four touchdowns, but Clark's return makes it tough to predict how much of role Tamme will play and of course, there is the Manning injury concern for him as well.
KICKER: Adam Vinatieri ($1): He's been around forever, but as accurate as ever after making 26 of 28 field goals last season.
DEFENSE/SPECIAL TEAMS: ($0). The Colts have never been a defense to draft and that is the case again this season.
