2011 Fantasy Football, Team Preview & Auction Values: Sidney Rice & The Seattle Seahawks
Quarterback: Tavaris Jackson ($0) – Jackson’s athleticism isn’t a question, but his ability to accurately deliver the football is a huge one. He also tends to hold onto the ball for too long, which combined with inaccuracy ledas to turnovers. Being reunited with Sidney Rice should help him, but not enough to make him ownable in anything but deep 2 quaterback leagues.
Running Back: Marshawn Lynch ($10) – We all remember the incredible run to seal the fate of the New Orleans Saints in the playoffs. Unfortunately, we also remember the unproductive seasons Lynch has had in the past. It is probably overly optimistic to believe that he can return to producing like an All-Pro back, but there could be some value here, as he is still the unquestionable starter with unquestionable natural ability. The addition of Tom Cable as the O-Line coach should help here as well. Might not be a bad third running back to roster.
Running Back: Justin Forsett ($1) – Forsett should see the majority of 3rd downs, and when he’s been on the field he’s been able to contribute at times. Lynch also hasn’t been the most healthy back either, as we saw against Chicago in the postseason when he managed only 4 carries, before having to leave the game. Forsett is still not worth a look until the late rounds of a deep league.
Wide Receiver: Sidney Rice ($9) – Rice had a huge year in 2009, but wasn’t able to follow it up in 2010 as injury forced him to miss the first 9 games of the season. When he returned he wasn’t as productive, but then again none of the Vikings were. If he can return to form, he should be Seattle’s best fantasy option, but he still won’t approach his 2009 numbers as both the passing and running games are weaker in Seattle.
Wide Receiver: Mike Williams ($3) – Williams resurrected what once was a promising career last year after being reunited with his college coach. He caught 65 passes, but only 2 of them were for scores. Rice should see the majority of targets, but if opposing defenses leave Williams on an island as the lesser of two evils, he could contribute decent numbers as a WR3/4.
Tight End: Zach Miller ($4) – Zach Miller will still be a fantasy starter after moving up the west coast from Oakland. He was able to put up good numbers on a bad team, which he might be asked to do again this season. Seahawks have had some success throwing to their tight ends in the past, and I expect Jackson to use Miller as his safety blanket. Miller is one of those guys who makes the TE position deep this year. If you don’t want to reach to get a stud, Miller is a great option later in the draft.
Kicker: Jeff Reed ($0) – Reed was only 15/22 on FG attempts last season and only 5/11 from outside 40 yards. There isn’t going to be value here.
D/ST: ($0) – While the defensive line showed marked improvement last year. The secondary struggled all season, and they were unable to rack up turnovers. The NFC West might be soft, but so is the Seahawks defense.
