2011 Fantasy Football, Team Preview & Auction Values: Steven Jackson & The St. Louis Rams

Sam Bradford showed the skill expected of a #1 pick.  He set rookie passing records for completions and yards.  He wasn’t asked to make the hard throws, resulting in a low PYA.

How much will the addition of Josh McDaniels increase the big play ability of the Rams?  Can the Rams take the next step and win the division as many pundits think they should?

Quarterback: Sam Bradford ($6) – If Sam Bradford can improve statistically under the tutelage of McDaniels, he could be a top 10 quarterback by the end of the season.  While there is a decent possibility of this happening, it’s also a lot of risk to depend on a 2nd year player at such a key position.  I would definitely try to grab him as a high upside backup if I wasn’t able to procure an elite option.

Running Back: Steven Jackson ($27) – I have SJax outside of my top 12 running backs this season.  He gets a ton of carries, and has six straight 1000 yard seasons under his belt.  The main problem is that he seems unable to find the endzone on a consistent basis.  After scoring a career high 13 touchdowns in 2006, Jackson has scored 22 times combined in the last 4 seasons.  I can no longer gamble that the lack of touchdowns is a “fluke”.

Running Back: Cadillac Williams ($1) – Williams should see the majority of 3rd down work, as Jackson has primarily been a 2 down back throughout his career.  There’s little to no value outside of a handcuff for Jackson.

Wide Receiver: Mike Sims-Walker ($1) – Sims-Walker joins a logjam at the wideout position in St. Louis.  He has shown big play ability in the past, but was all too often invisible.  Bradford will throw the ball a lot this season, but nobody is quite yet sure who will be on the other end of those passes.  I wouldn’t try to guess on draft day.  Take a wait and see approach with Rams wideouts.

Wide Receiver: Danario Alexander ($1) – Alexander has all the physical tools one could want in a wide receiver.  The problem is he has the knees of a 45 year old catcher.  If he can stay healthy and win a starting job there is huge upside here, but those are big if’s.

Tight End: Michael Hoomanawanui ($0) –Hoomanawanui had good numbers when he was healthy last year.  The biggest hurdle for him this season is his own offensive coordinator.  McDaniels doesn’t involve the tight end much into his game plan, which gives “Illinois Mike” little value.

Kicker: Josh Brown ($1) – Brown is a kicker I love for this upcoming season.  A huge leg, improving offense, and a home dome should have Brown among the elite kickers this season.

D/ST: ($0) – The Rams defense should be improved enough to be middle of the pack for fantasy purposes.  Playing in a weak NFC West definitely helps their cause.  They should be a very decent matchup play this coming year.
