2012 Fantasy Baseball AL-Only Waiver Wire, Week 8: Wil Myers Gunning For The Show
Wil Myers | OF | Kansas City Royals
While fantasy owners are disappointed that Wil Myers is no longer a catcher, he can still present real value in the outfield, especially in AL-Only leagues. Myers had a tough go of it last year when he hit .254 with 8 home runs in AA, but that lack of numbers was mainly due to some injuries that lingered throughout the year. Prospect experts never cooled on Myers and he didn’t disappoint this season as he came out hitting .351 in AA with 13 homers in 35 games. Last week, the Royals surprised a lot of people and called Myers up to AAA, signifying that Myers’s call to the majors may not be too far away. Don’t be too late to miss on Wil Myers.
Jake Odorizzi | SP | Kansas City Royals
Along with Myers, Jake Odorizzi got the call to AAA last week after a strong start to his season in AA. In AA, he posted a 3.32 ERA with a 2.20 FIP and a ridiculous 11.13 K/9. The strikeouts are nothing new for Odorizzi, as he posted an 11.83 K/9 last season at High-A ball after being dealt in the offseason as a key part of the Zack Greinke deal. The 6’2’’ right-hander has a smooth and easily repeatable delivery that should give him long-term success in the major leagues. He relies on a four and two seam fastball to set up hitters followed by a curveball and changeup to get them out. Kansas City was already in the need of pitching help and with Danny Duffy out for the season; Odorizzi may not be far away from pitching in Kansas City.
Derek Norris | C | Oakland Athletics
No longer in Washington as he was part of the big Gio Gonzalez trade, Derek Norris has had lots of success this year for the Athletics’ AAA affiliate. Norris is hitting .295 with 5 home runs and has most impressively cut his strikeout rate nearly in half from last season (27.7% to 14.9%). Norris is also walking less, meaning he’s being more aggressive with pitches and using his solid hit tool to cause damage early in counts. The power has always been there for Norris, so if he can cut down on his strikeouts, he could be a real fantasy force. Don’t be surprised if Norris in the main backstop for Oakland in the second half of the year after a Kurt Suzuki trade.
Matt LaPorta | 1B | Cleveland Indians
Yeah, we’ve all been down this road, but why not give it one more shot? There is a potential opening in Cleveland with Travis Hafner’s injury and Casey Kotchman hasn’t exactly set the world on fire so far this season. While LaPorta’s 1000 MLB plate appearances are nothing to write home about, he showed a little bit of improvement last year and the power is certainly there. This season, he’s hitting the cover off the ball with a .321 average and 13 home runs. His walk rate is back over 11% where it hasn’t been since the start of his 2010 AAA season. Potential and opportunity are something you look for in AL-Only league adds and you don’t need to look much farther than Matt LaPorta to find both.
