2012 Fantasy Baseball Daily Fix: Chris Young Crashes Lands On The DL & More

Picture

A widely held opinion at the start of the 2012 season was the best pitching staff in baseball resided in the NL East. It's true a dozen or so games into the season, but surprisingly the staff is in Washington DC, not in Philadelphia. The Nationals are sitting at 10-3 on the season, after Wednesday night's 3-2 win over the Astros, led by Jordan Zimmerman, who went 7 IP giving up 1 ER, 4 hits, no walks and getting 3 K's. Edwin Jackson is in position to pitch the Nationals to a 4 game sweep of Houston tomorrow, thanks to the strong games from Zimmerman, Stephen Strasburg (6 IP, 2 ER, 5K) and Gio Gonzalez (7 IP, 0 ER, 8 K) leading up to Thursday's game. The Nationals pitching staff currently leads the league in ERA, FIP, HR/9 and K's. They're second in WHIP and K/9. Things are looking up in the capital.

Bad news for fantasy owners enjoying Chris Young’s torrid start to the season. His battle with the outfield wall was ill advised and his shoulder paid the price, landing him on the 15 day DL with a joint contusion and small ligament tear. Tough luck for a guy hitting .410/.500/.897 with 5 HR, 8 R, 13 RBI and a 284 wRC+ in 46 PA to start the season.

Do you want to know the horrible truth or do you want to see Yoenis Cespedes sock some dingers? Dingers, dingers, dingers. Follow  @CespedesAtBat and you'll be alerted whenever he's coming up. He hit his fourth of the season tonight in the first inning off Ervin Santana.

Mike Napoli continued his destruction of the Red Sox, getting 3 hits, 4 RBI and his 4th HR of the season. The HR came off Josh Beckett, who had a decent game with 7 IP, 3 ER, 7 K. Even after optioning Mark Melancon to the triple A, the Red Sox bullpen continued it's horrid start to the season, with Franklin Morales giving up 3 ER in the 8th inning, while Bobby Valentine sat passively on the bench, thankful he is renting in Boston.

R.A. Dickey's 14 game consecutive quality start streak came to an end in the rain in Atlanta as the Braves chased him in 4.1 IP with 8 ER. The Braves won 14-6 with RBI all up and down the line-up, led by Freddie Freeman who had 3 RBI and his first HR of the season. Dan Uggla and Juan Francisco also went yard.

Matt Cain and Cliff Lee decided to duel it up Aaron Burr/Alexander Hamilton style in San Francisco, both submitting outstanding starts in a 1-0 11th inning Giants win. Cain went 9 IP with 2 hits, 0 ER, 1 BB and 4 K’s on only 91 pitches and Lee went 10 IP with 7 hits, 0 ER, 0 BB and 7 K’s. Melky Cabrera ended it with a walk off single off Antonio Bastardo.

In a sign that the Mayans might be right about the apocalypse, Chone Figgins hit a HR and Prince Fielder stole a base. Might as well spend your 401K this summer.

Carlos Beltran knocked his 5th HR and stole his 3rd base of the season, in a Cardinals 11-1 destruction of the Reds and Mat Latos who gave up 8 ER in 5.2 IP.

Matt Kemp had a first inning RBI single off Zack Greinke, finishing 1 for 3 with a walk. Greinke continued his dominance at home going 7 IP with 7 K’s and 2 ER. The Brewers won 3-2 in the 10th inning, when Nyjer Morgan went into straight hero mode, running through the third base coaches stop sign on a short fly out to left field and sliding into home like one of those fainting goats. He was called safe, but he was clearly out.

The Rays roughed up Brandon Morrow to the tune of 6 ER in 6 IP, with home runs from Ben Zobrist, Sean Rodriguez and Matt Joyce. Luke Scott also hit a grand slam in the 9th inning off sacrificial lamb Carlos Villanueva. No word on whether or not Scott also obnoxiously shoved his political views down Villanueva's throat.
