Writing articles like this aren’t usually what I do, but I figured I’d better take this opportunity to write about my Mets as they’re 4-1 and in first place in the NL East.  Let’s take a look at the fantasy prospects from this team of overachievers.

David Wright 3B

Wright missed last night’s game with a broken right pinky.  The good news for fantasy owners is that no surgery is needed and Terry Collins hopes Wright can return to the lineup as soon as Friday.  Through 4 games this season Wright’s slash line is .583/.647/.833.  While these numbers are obviously unsustainable, it is encouraging to see Wright drive the ball all over the field which is what used to have him as a fantasy first rounder.  His OPS from 2005-2008 never dipped below .900, but after moving to Citi Field in 2009 his OPS dropped to .837 in 2009, .856 in 2010, and a disappointing .771 last season.  There are some in the Mets organization that worried that the cavernous dimensions on Citi Field was getting into the he of Wright and the other players.  With the new dimensions this year, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Wright bounce back to his Shea Stadium form.

Ike Davis 1B

What makes the Mets’ hot start even more unexpected is that they’ve done it getting no production out of their cleanup hitter.  Davis is 0/16 on the season and is back in the starting lineup after sitting yesterday.  Davis has showed tremendous power after being called up in 2010, and at the start of 2011 before being sidelined for the season with a leg injury.  While fantasy owners who took a flier on Davis may be regretting their decision now, we have to keep in mind that he missed almost all of spring training due to valley fever.  While he isn’t a top 12 1B, he should have value as either a Util or bench player, as I would be surprised if doesn’t reach 20 homeruns barring injury.  If you have him, be patient.  If someone else has him, hope that they are impatient and drop them.

Daniel Murphy 1B, 2B, 3B

Daniel Murphy is one of those players you see in the batters box, and you can’t stop thinking that the man can hit.  He’s a line drive hitter who is excellent at making contact (139 K’s in 1049 ABs).  He has a career slash line of .294/.344/.443.  He’s not going to supply much in terms of power or speed, but I think he will still contribute there (say 10/10).  His positional flexibility makes him one of the more attractive bench players to own, especially in a league that counts AVG instead of OBP as he hardly walks.

Lucas Duda OF

Duda is a slugging left handed hitter who played well last year for the Mets at first base.  He’s manning left field this year, so he has eligibility at both 1B and OF.  He has tremendous power as evidenced by his two homer game on Saturday.  He still has his struggles against southpaws, but I would expect 20 homeruns from him this year while hoping for 30.  His fantasy value could see an uptick, if Davis continues to struggle, as Duda may slide in at cleanup.

Johan Santana SP

Santana looked great in his first start since 2010.  While his velocity won’t be what it used to be, he is still a fierce competitor whose changeup remains one of the best in the game.  He was able to pitch 5 scoreless innings and was pulled after 84 pitches.  He gave up 2 hits and 2 walks, while striking out 5.  He won’t be an elite fantasy pitcher as he once was, but he should be able to contribute in all formats.

Jonathan Niese SP

Jonathan Niese is a guy I targeted in all of my leagues.  At a glance his career numbers look pedestrian, but if you look closer at his peripherals he was a prime candidate to have a break out year.  His career BABIP against has always been bad, and it could be that he’s not the kind of pitcher who can get batters off balance, but I would expect his luck to peter out eventually.  In his first start this season he threw 6 hitless innings before getting touched up in the 7th.  If he is available in your league, I would try to pick him up and see how it plays out.  It’s low risk, but the reward could be huge.
