2012 Fantasy Baseball, Week 18 Rookie Report: Texas calls up Mike Olt
SP/RP- SAMUEL DEDUNO (MINNESOTA)- Sam is currently 3-0 with the Twins sporting a 2.45 ERA and a 1.45 WHIP. Deduno joined the rotation in July where he owns a 2-0 record on the road with a 2.16 ERA. He has a 45-45 career minor league won-loss record. He is worth a flier in head to head leagues when he is a two start pitcher.
SS- JEAN SEGURA (MILWAUKEE)- Segura got the call to the bigs yesterday for the Brewers and promptly went 0-4 agains the Reds. Jean was one of the Angels top prospects before being traded over in the Zack Grienke deal in late July. His minor league numbers show a career .313 batting average and a 50 stolen base season at the A level in 2010. Jean will get every chance to shine from now until late September in Milwaukee where he may be worth a flier if your struggling in the SB, R and BA categories.
3B/1B- MIKE OLT (TEXAS)- Olt has huge potential as he brings 28 HR's with him from AA Frisco. So far at the big level he is batting .286 with three RBI' s in just seven AB's. He looks to be in a platoon situation with Mitch Moreland as of now which means he will only play against left hand pitchers severely hampering his fantasy value. My recommendation is to keep and eye on the situation in Texas and jump on him if he starts to see everyday playing time.
3B-JOSH VITTERS (CHI CUBS)- Josh made his first major league start agains the Padres last night as he went 0-4. Vitters batted .304 with 17 homers and 68 RBI at Triple-A Iowa and was the No. 3 overall pick in the 2007 draft showing plenty of potential. The Cubs have called up most of their blue chip prospects and it looks like they will ride them through the rest of 2012. Vitters is worth a look in NL-only formats at this time until he proves he is fantasy worthy.
OF-BRETT JACKSON (CHI CUBS)- Im sorry "Mrs. Jackson your son might be for real "but we have to cut down on his strike outs! Jackson who is considered one of the Cub's top prospects has struck out 158 times in just 407 AB's for AAA Iowa this year. His minor league career shows him averaging a strikeout every 3.78 plate appearances. Jackson batted .256 with 15 home runs, 47 RBI and 27 stolen bases at Triple-A before receiving the call in Chicago. Plenty of upside here just make sure your league doesnt subract point totals for strike outs for batters.
