2012 Fantasy Football, Week 11 Injury Report: Rob Gronkowski Breaks His Arm

Picture

Rob Gronkowski

LeSean McCoy (RB | Philadelphia Eagles 100% owned in Y!) – McCoy suffered a concussion late in the fourth quarter of a blowout win in Washington. He did not return.

Fantasy Spin: Let’s move beyond the question of why McCoy was in the game at all. It seems that Andy Reid has punted on the season. He doesn’t even look like he’s paying attention anymore.  The Eagles play Monday night so McCoy’s brain has an extra day to heal. However, if he does not play Bryce Brown is the clear beneficiary and should be added in all leagues.

Rob Gronkowski (TE | New England Patriots 99% in Y!) – Gronkowski broke his arm on an extra point attempt late in the Patriots romp over the Colts. He is out four to six weeks.

Fantasy Spin: A huge blow to fantasy owners so close to the playoffs. With many leagues past the trade deadline, there isn’t a replacement to be had on the waiver wire. The Patriots hope to get Aaron Hernandez back this week and will likely employ Wes Welker and Julian Edelman to fill in as well.

Steve Smith (WR | Carolina Panthers 96% in Y!) –  Smith dislocated a finger on Sunday, but returned to the game and finished without any other issues.

Fantasy Spin: It looks like there is nothing to see here as Smith was able to complete the game. Smith remains the number one WR in Carolina.

Dwayne Bowe (WR | Kansas City Chiefs 95% in Y!) – Bowe injured his neck and did not return for the Chiefs on Sunday.

Fantasy Spin: The Chiefs offense is awful. They are bringing Brady Quinn back to start this week which only further damages Bowe’s value. I would look for alternatives this week for Bowe even if he happens to emerge healthy for Week 12.

Maurice Jones-Drew (RB | Jacksonville Jaguars 93% in Y!) – Jones-Drew sat out another week for the Jaguars. His replacement in the starting lineup , Rashad Jennings, was replaced himself by Jalen Parmele.

Fantasy Spin: At this point, it looks like the Jags may just throw the ball around the park all day and skip running the ball. MJD has said he’s targeting Week 13 for his return. The key to the Jags running game seems to be fullback Greg Jones who missed last week. If Jones continues to be out, the Jags may stick with the ‘run and shoot’ with Chad Henne at the helm.

DeMarco Murray (RB | Dallas Cowboys 92% in Y!)
– Murray sat out the Cowboys Week 11 victory over the Browns.

Fantasy Spin: There was hope that Murray would be ready for the Thanksgiving Day matchup with Washington. Reports today indicate that Murray will not be ready and will not suit up making Felix Jones an option in Week 12. It seems Murray is getting closer to being fully healthy so we could see him as soon as Week 13.

Darren Sproles (RB | New Orleans Saints 91% in Y!) – Sproles remained out in Week 11 even though practice reports made it seem as though he might play. He is expected back in Week 12.

Fantasy Spin: It will be interesting to see how Sproles is reincorporated into the offense as the Saints have gotten more touches (and production) out of Mark Ingram and Chris Ivory in Sproles’ absence. Sproles will still be a big part of the offense (and a PPR-stud), but he could lose some touches to Ingram and Ivory. I like Ingram to have some value down the stretch even in shallow leagues.

Willis McGahee (RB | Denver Broncos 89% in Y!)
– McGahee injured his knee in the Broncos victory over the Chargers. He initially thought the injury was minor. However, after an MRI it was determined he tore his MCL and broke his leg. He will be out for 6 to 8 weeks (with McGahee hoping to be back in 4 to 6).

Fantasy Spin: This is a big blow for the Broncos as they will now turn to rookie Ronnie Hillman and journeyman Lance Ball. Hillman has looked good in bursts, especially on runs to the outside. He’s struggled between the tackles in the few games I’ve seen him play. Ball is likely to be the third down and short yardage back cutting into Hillman’s value. The Broncos also have Knowshown Moreno, but he lacks a role at this point.

Fred Jackson (RB | Buffalo Bills 87% in Y!) – Jackson missed Week 11 with a concussion. Teammate C.J. Spiller took on a heavy workload in his absence.

Fantasy Spin: Spiller looks to be matchup proof should Jackson require a longer absence. However, the news out of Buffalo is that Chan Gailey expects Jackson to practice this week. If he practices, I expect the Bills to ease him back into the RB rotation giving Spiller some upside this week. I expect the normal split to continue for the rest of the season once Jackson is fully healthy.

Danny Amendola (WR | St. Louis Rams 79% in Y!) – Amendola left the game with a foot injury, but did return to the game.

Fantasy Spin: The only knock on Amendola is health and he has yet to put that knock to rest. He has been getting high praise from the scouting community with regard to his recent play. However, he’s useless to fantasy players if he’s not on the field. He’s a must start in most leagues (especially PPR) because he is clearly Sam Bradford’s favorite target.

Felix Jones (RB | Dallas Cowboys 77% in Y!) – Jones suffered a knee injury, but played through the injury in Week 11.

Fantasy Spin: This is standard operating procedure for Jones. He picks up an injury seemingly every week. His propensity for injuries mutes his value, but he is currently the workhorse in the Cowboys backfield. And, with DeMarco Murray out on the short Thanksgiving week, he’s a solid play against a suspect Washington run defense.

Brent Celek (TE | Philadelphia Eagles 69% owned in Y!) – Celek was checked for a concussion on Sunday, but the tests came back negative.

Fantasy Spin: Reports are that Celek will be fine for Week 12. However, watch the reports out of Philadelphia this week to see if he misses any practice time at all. There are rumors that Michael Vick may make a miraculous recovery from his severe concussion and play this week so Celek could be a low-end TE1 going forward.

Pierre Garcon (WR | Washington Redskins 49% in Y!) – Garcon made his triumphant return to the Washington lineup against the Eagles. He caught three passes for five yards.

Fantasy Spin: Hold Garcon on your bench, but ignore him until he shows more. He’s got a tough foot injury to fight through and may be more decoy than destination for the Washington offense for the rest of the year.

Isaac Redman – (RB | Pittsburgh Steelers 46% in Y!) – Redman left Sunday’s game with a concussion and did not return.

Fantasy Spin: Redman was one of the trio of “starting” RBs for the Steelers Sunday. With he, Jonathan Dwyer and Rashard Mendendhall all healthy, one have RB1 value. Monitor practice reports to see if Redman is able to make it back this week.

Dennis Pitta (TE | Baltimore Ravens 31% in Y!) – Pitta suffered a concussion in the Ravens scintillating 13-10 victory over the Steelers.

Fantasy Spin: Pitta was an early season darling, but has found his way onto the waiver wire in many leagues as he’s been inconsistent at best. Ed Dickson could see an uptick in targets, but is likely only an option in deep leagues.

Donnie Avery (WR | Indianapolis Colts 27% in Y!) – Avery left Week 11 with a concussion and did not return.

Fantasy Spin: Avery has been solid if unspectacular for the Colts this season. There is a good chance Avery misses Week 12. If he does T.Y. Hilton (who picked up 6 catches, 100 yards and 2 TDs on Sunday) stands to be the biggest beneficiary and should be added in most leagues.

Andrew Hawkins (WR | Cincinnati Bengals 21% in Y!)
– Hawkins injured his knee on Friday during practice and subsequently missed the Bengals’ game on Sunday. It is unclear when he will return.

Fantasy Spin: Hawkins has been a pleasant surprise for the Bengals. His replacement last week was Mohamed Sanu who found his way to the endzone. Sanu will continue to have value while Hawkins is out. Monitor practice reports this week to see if Hawkins will return.

Kevin Ogletree  (WR | Dallas Cowboys 14% in Y!)
– Ogletree suffered a concussion (even though he said he did not) on Sunday and sat out Monday’s practice for the Thursday tilt against Washington.

Fantasy Spin: Ogletree was being phased out of the offense prior to this injury and this will likely further his drop in targets. The Cowboys don’t seem to need him and it is probable you do not either.

Kevin Kolb (QB | Arizona Cardinals 4% in Y!) – Kolb did not practice in Week 11. Kolb has done some individual work as he attempts to come back from injury.

Fantasy Spin: The Cardinals QB situation is a raging tire fire at this point. They expect to welcome Beanie Wells back this week, but it is unclear that will help the situation enough to lift the Cardinals (and their WRs) back to even mediocre. Avoid the Cardinals offense until Kolb returns.

Blaine Gabbert (QB | Jacksonville Jaguars 4% in Y!)
– Gabbert hurt his elbow in the first half against the Texans and did not return.

Fantasy Spin: Gabbert was only on the radar in QB2 leagues and likely only as a bye week replacement. However, the emergence of Chad Henne against the stout Texans defense now puts him on the horizon. I imagine Gabbert will stay “injured” this week and Henne could be an option for those with concussed QBs.

Byron Leftwich (QB | Pittsburgh Steelers 3% in Y!) – Leftwich broke two ribs and injured his shoulder in his first start of the season for the Steelers. He played most of the game with the rib injury.

Fantasy Spin: Leftwich likely wasn’t near your starting lineup and it looks like he won’t be near the Steelers’ this week either. Leftwich will likely sit out this week and Pittsburgh will turn to Charlie Batch against the Browns.

Eddie Royal (WR | San Diego Chargers 2% in Y!) – Royal injured his hamstring in Week 11 and did not return.

Fantasy Spin: Royal has been a bench player for most of the season. And will continue to be relevant only in return yardage leagues when healthy.

Jerricho Cotchery  (WR – Pittsburgh Steelers 1% in Y!)
Cotchery was hurt on the final drive of the Steelers loss to the Ravens after a big hit by Bernard Pollard.

Fantasy Spin: The Steelers worked out Plaxico Burress this week and the news is that Cotchery could be out this week. With Charlie Batch under center, the Steelers WR situation is one to be avoided.

Baron Batch (RB | Pittsburgh Steelers 0% in Y!)  – Batch left Sunday’s Steelers-Ravens matchup with a foot injury.

Fantasy Spin: Batch saw playing time after fellow RB Isaac Redman left with a concussion. Batch has shown flashes this year, but will only have value in deep leagues if Redman misses extended time.
