2014 Fantasy Football: Who is Jacquian Williams?
Jacquian Williams entered the NFL in 2011 and had a standout rookie season (78 total tackles, 3 fumble recovers and 4 pass deflections) and even made plays during their Superbowl run in 2011. Big things were expected of Williams soon after as the Giants thought they solved their LB issues; but they where wrong. Williams battled injuries in 2012 and 2013 and just couldn’t stay on the field. He then went to playing sparingly where he was a nickel LB and played on passing downs; hasn’t played an entire game since.
As we enter 2014, Williams is healthier than ever and is poised for a breakout season as the Giants LB corps is shaping up and the smoke is clearing. Williams will be entering his fourth season and is on the verge of becoming an every-down LB at the WIL for the New York Giants. He possess speed and sideline-to-sideline athleticism, impressive coverage ability and shown improvement against the run (his weakness, had to improve to become three-down LB).
“He’s performed like he’s a three-down player thus far in camp” says Giants’ Defensive Coordinator Perrry Fewell. “Just confidence in his run fits, confidence in his coverage ability, his knowledge of assignments, executing his assignments with speed.”
Jacquian has indeed worked real hard this off-season whether it was OTA’s or mini-camp, he wants the job and he has what it takes. Williams feels more settled and comfortable in the defense, feels strongly that he’ll make an impact once again. He’s ready to become the Giants’ three-down WIL LB and showcase his athletic ability that could be amongst the elite; his talent has always been there, just staying on the field has been the problem. Staying more disciplined and trusting his instincts more will help him along the way, getting stronger to shed blocks and running with the TE’s on passing downs.
In the IDP world, Jacquian is a sleeper and flying under the radar. He’s a rare three-down LB that you can get late in your drafts, or if you’re lucky, pick him up off the waiver wire. In a handful of IDP only mock drafts that I’ve done, he’s not even drafted as 85 other LB’s fly off the board and that’s ridiculous. In my updated LB rankings I have him sitting as LB50, floating around LB4 value and will give you LB3 upside with LB2 ceiling (barring any injuries to either him or Beason). Williams is definitely capable of getting you tackles, 90+ is reachable and with him dropping back into coverage he’ll get you a handful of pass deflections. Don’t rush out to grab Jacquian, be patient and stock up at other positions because Jacquian is another LB showing you have some talent available in late rounds. Be confident in drafting Williams, I’ve done the same and I’ve picked him up off waivers where I could.
End quote for Jacquian as he’s coming into his own onto making a splash in the IDP world and on game day, the late Robin Williams once said “You’re only given one little spark of madness. You mustn’t lose it.”
