2015 Fantasy Football: Week One Gold Mine
Can you smell it? Football is back! And there is no better time in a 365 day calendar year than opening day of the National Football League.
The last seven months have been rattled with turmoil as Deflategate reared its ugly face, a scandal in and of itself that could have shaken any human being to its core. But the Patriots and Tom Brady stood strong and firm and inevitably won, only to then be accused of even deeper allegations following the Spygate situation of the earlier 2000s. Suspensions to some high profiled players on both sides of the ball changed the landscape for many teams. And the growth of popularity of the daily fantasy game on sites like Draftkings have made the fantasy football outlook bigger than it has ever been before.
As we are less than 12 hours away from the start of the 2015 NFL season your draft season is coming to an end and as you meticulously comb through your rosters, the waiver wire and potential trade opportunities to make the right fit for your roster know that you are not alone. The stress, the angst, the overwhelming pressure you feel to be perfect week in and week out, you are not alone.
But despite all that the one thing you can always be assured with is that no matter how good you think your team is there can always be improvements. So like years past lets take a look at some players wasting away on the waiver wire that could help you this week and beyond.
The following players are owned in 35% or less of ESPN leagues. Don’t play in ESPN Leagues? Don’t worry we have percentage of ownership in Yahoo and NFL leagues as well as both Fanduel and DK prices to potentially fit them in your daily lineups too.
Marcus Mariota (TEN): ESPN: 35.1; Yahoo: 43; NFL: 19.7; FD: 7.1K; DK: 6K
It has been a few years since we have been witnessed to a really great rookie QB. Derek Carr played well last season but wasn’t great; neither were Blake Bortles or Johnny Manziel. Enter Mariota the #2 draft pick in the 2015 NFL Rookie draft by the Tennessee Titans. The former Oregon Duck has all of the skill sets to be one of the best athletes in the game but where he exceeds athleticism he lacks true pro-style ability. Many of his weaknesses have been locked down to his ability to make really intelligent throws in small windows. But that all changed during the pre season where in his limited time on the field he exceeded a 100 QB rating, 70% completion percentage, 326 yards and a score. Granted this was all the pre season and that can never be a real judge of how well they will play once the lights are officially on but Mariota is a special type of talent and is facing a Bucs team that finished 23rd against opposing QBs. The Bucs gave up 16 points per game to quarterbacks including giving up at least 270 yards and one touchdown to them in the final four games of the season.
Andy Dalton (CIN): ESPN: 19.2; Yahoo: 27; NFL: 13.6; FD: 7.1K; DK: 6.1K
Andy has never been known as a volume guy only throwing for more than 3,700 yards just once in his life and last year was no exception throwing for nearly 1,000 yards less than he did in the previous season but he has the weapons around him to get touchdowns. In the final four games of last season he scored two touchdowns in three of those games. Dalton gets AJ Green back and healthy, Tyler Eiffert back and healthy, Giovanni Bernard, Jeremy Hill and if those guys don’t get it done both Marvin Jones and Mohamed Sanu are there to keep it going. The Bengals get to face the Raiders this week that faced troubles of their own in 2014 stopping the pass. The Raiders were the 8th worst team against opposing QBs giving up 16.4 points per game to them.
Terrance West (TEN): ESPN: 24.6; Yahoo: 6; NFL: 67.6; FD: 5.5K; DK: 3.6K
A lot of pundits are labeling Bishop Sankey (TEN) as the guy to take in week 1 for Tennessee but West is just as interesting. Sankey gained more than 50 yards just four times in the entire 2014 season as the lead back in Tennessee where as West gained that six times last season as the secondary HB on the Browns roster. West, is coming in following being traded earlier this week, has explosive mechanics that can get down the field and every time he was given enough carries he made sure to produce. The Titans are primed for another RBBC situation for the second year in a row under Ken Wisenhunt but West is the more talented of the two backs and although Dexter McCluster is going to vulture many of the passing down situations West can easily take over for Bishop Sankey who just hasn’t lived up to any of the hype. The Bucs ranked 25th in the league last year against the run something that can help to exploit deficiencies from other areas of the field specifically the aforementioned Mariota.
Rueben Randle (NYG): ESPN: 35.7; Yahoo: 42; NFL: 2.3; FD: 5.3K; DK: 5.1K
With the Odell Beckham Jr injury and the inevitable injury that cost Victor Cruz a large chunk of his season Rueben Randle was consistently relied on by Eli Manning to get the Giants offense moving in the right direction. For the first time in Randle’s career he exceeded 70 catches and 900 yards and although he digressed in touchdown grabs he was utilized more to extend drive deep into games. Victor Cruz is still nursing an injury and it could be worse than expected and ODB is undoubtedly going to see a ton of double coverages which all leads to Randle having an as consistent season as 2014. The Cowboys played well last year against opposing WRs ranking 7th best but the Giants vs. Cowboys usually end up being a shootout and the injury to Orlando Scandrick will hurt Dallas’ secondary. Randle is currently owned sparingly throughout each of the major sites but his biggest value is on daily sites that will allow you to support many of the leagues top talents in your lineups.
Brandon Coleman (NO): ESPN: 15.6; Yahoo: 26; NFL: 0.8; FD: 4.5K; DK: 3K
The loss of Jimmy Graham in New Orleans is going to give plenty of targets to go around, more than 100 to be in fact and although Marques Colston and Brandin Cooks should get plenty of those targets Brandon Coleman is gaining some steam in New Orleans. Being listed as a starter in the teams third pre season game over Colston and putting together a really solid game in the teams 4th pre season game, Coleman received praise from teammates and coaches. He has a solid shot of being the teams 3rd receiver in an offense that loves to sling the rock Coleman could be a really solid sleeper pick for you and your roster. The Cardinals finished 18th against wide outs last season and although Patrick Peterson is still one of the leagues top DBs the loss of Antonio Cromartie on the other side of the field will make it pretty easy for Drew Brees and squad to exploit the holes left behind.
Richard Rodgers (GB): ESPN: 18.3; Yahoo: 10; NFL: 7; FD: 4.9K; DK: 2.5K
Richard Rodgers came on strong in the last couple of pre season games catching 4 passes for 40 yards and a score. The loss of Jordy Nelson for the season and the injury to Randal Cobb’s shoulder will open up opportunities to other pass catchers, Rodgers being one of them. The signing of James Jones will certainly hurt a little bit as Aaron Rodgers has plenty of familiarity with the former Packer but Rodgers has been named starter leading into the season and is certainly in line for a chunk of red zone targets. Aaron Rodgers through more than 75 passes to tight ends in 2014 of which 30 of them went to Rodgers. If Richard Rodgers can take on a heavier role at the position he could be a perfect option in deeper leagues and you can’t beat that $2,500 price tag on DraftKings.
Whether it’s a QB or TE you are looking for there are plenty of options that can help you even in week 1 of the season. You may look at your roster and feel better than you really are, consider these players and others who are capable of making you better heading into the 2015 kickoff.
