Fantasy Baseball Daily Fix: July 6, 2012: Carlos Lee pays immediate dividends

Picture

Carlos Lee paid immediate dividends for his new team. Less than 24 hours after being traded from Houston to Miami, Lee went 2-for-4 in his Marlins debut and scored a run while batting third in the order. He's obviously an upgrade over Gaby Sanchez at first for Miami and the Marlins are an upgrade for him over the Astros. He could be in line for an uptick in fantasy stock as he joins a better lineup hitting behind Jose Reyes and Hanley Ramirez. Lee could also help out a few of his teammates, in particular Logan Morrison, who has finally started hitting lately. Morrison had two hits and two RBIs in the clean-up spot and should continue to take the plate with runners on base in that spot in the order.

If the Marlins offense improves with Lee, that would also benefit the pitchers including Mark Buehrle, who was great against the Brewers on Thursday. He pitched 7 2/3 scoreless innings with eight strikeouts and didn't get a blown save from Heath Bell, who threw a perfect ninth inning. Buehrle had one of many sterling pitching performances on the day including some surprising starters who continued solid seasons.

Michael Fiers had his scoreless streak end, but gave up just two runs in 7 1/3 innings while striking out nine to move his ERA to 2.31. Jose Quintana bounced back from a rough outing to give up one run in eight innings for the White Sox and lower his ERA to 2.04. Matt Harrison’s ERA is 3.10 after giving up two runs in eight innings and Jeff Karstens threw eight scoreless innings for the Pirates. Scott Diamond gave up two hits in seven innings to drop his ERA to 2.62 and Lance Lynn threw six scoreless for St. Louis.

Two pitchers traded for each other in the offseason faced off and had good nights as Cinci's Mat Latos threw seven scoreless innings and Edinson Volquez of San Diego gave up one run in eight innings.

It was rare off night for R.A. Dickey, who gave up five runs in seven innings, but the game was even worse for Jonathan Papelbon, who blew the save by giving up two runs in the ninth. Santiago Casilla also blew a save for the Giants by giving up two runs in the ninth.

The not-so-surprising performances at the plate included Miguel Cabrera continuing his hot streak with two hits and two RBIs. David Wright had three hits, including a homer, and four RBIs. Mike Trout had another solid night, going 2-for-2 with a walk, two runs, two sacrifice flies and two RBIs

Brian McCann showed signs of life as he raised his average to .230 with two hits, including a homer. Juan Francisco got a rare start for the Braves and he homered as well.

Minnesota got a lot of production out of the bottom of its order as Brian Dozier and Darin Mastroianni each had three hits. Mike Fontenot's playing time has dropped with Chase Utley's return, but he had two hits to raise his average to .338. San Francisco's Justin Christian may have earned more time in the outfield after getting three hit in the lead-off spot.
The Royals missed Salvador Perez early in the season and if he has not been picked up in your fantasy league, go get him. He had four hits to raise his average to .425 since returning from injury.

The disappointing performance of the night may have been Brian LaHair, who got a rare opportunity to play against a left-handed pitcher and didn't look ready to be anything more than a platoon player. He struck out three times.

There was some carnage as Dee Gordon and Dan Haren both went on the DL and recent Astros surprise Dallas Keuchel was sent to the minors. Luis Cruz looks like the replacement for Gordon and had two hits to raise his average to .417 in limited action, but that could soon be full-time action for a month.

A prospect to consider picking up is outfielder Carlos Peguero of the Mariners. He's not a hot young prospect and he's played in the bigs before, but he has pop and had five homers in his final five games at Tacoma before the call-up and considering Seattle's anemic offense, he should get playing time.

Two of the top young pitchers in the game face off today when Drew Pomeranz and the Rockies visit Stephen Strasburg and the Nationals. Pomeranz was great in his first start since returning to the bigs while Strasburg looks to bounce back after a rough start ended early due to heat issues.

Those playing daily fantasy leagues should love the Tigers today against Jonathan Sanchez and his 6.10 ERA. Miguel Cabrera is an especially strong play and I like Austin Jackson as well.

Today could also mark the season debut of Ryan Howard, but I'd wait and see on him.

With all the recent injuries, you should check out www.minorleaguebaseball.com each day to check the stats of the top prospects who could be on their way to the majors soon.
