Fantasy Baseball Daily Fix, June 14th, 2012: Matt Cain is Perfect, Dickey Comes Up Short
Flawless victory. Matt Cain still had a full power bar, after pummeling the Astros and tearing their heart out. Cain pitched the 22nd perfect game in MLB history on Wednesday night, preventing all 27 Astros hitters he faced from getting on base. It was the first perfect game in San Francisco Giants history, the second in this young season – Phil Humber pitched one in April – and tied Sandy Koufax for most strike outs in a perfect game, with 14.
Any perfect game is going to be full of drama, since everything has to go right and Cain’s was no exception. Gregor Blanco made an amazing diving catch on the warning track, ensuring he’ll be part of many future highlight reels. Late in the game, Bruce Bochy pulled Pablo Sandoval and moved Joaquin Arias over to third for defensive purposes. It was a great move, considering Arias made a good play on the final out of the game, seeming to lose his footing after snagging the grounder down the third base line, but throwing a nice strike to first to seal perfection.
It’s been a great season for Matt Cain, who currently sports a 8-2 record, a 2.41 ERA and a 0.94 WHIP. He also seems to be on a personal mission to kill xFIP, with his 2012, 2.41 ERA versus 3.53 xFIP, mirroring his career 3.30 ERA versus 4.21 xFIP.
To add to Wednesday night’s craziness, we were a David Wright away from having TWO perfect games. RA Dickey threw a complete game in Tampa, with 12 Ks, 1 hit, 0 BB and 1 unearned run. The Mets plan on appealing the hit, contesting it should have been ruled an error on Wright. It was a BJ Upton dribbler down the third baseline that Wright tried to barehand in the first inning. Later, in the 9th, Wright was also responsible for the throwing error that put Elliot Johnson on first. Johnson later came around to score, ending Dickey’s 32 inning scoreless streak. The prospect of an appealed no-hitter was lame enough to begin with, coming on the same night as a perfect game, the Mets are better off dropping it all together. Thanks for nothing David.
Is it possible that the Nationals have an emerging young hitter, primed to take the spotlight from Bryce Harper? “That’s a clown question, bro.” 25 year old, rookie, Tyler Moore did have a big night in Toronto though, hitting his first major league home run in the 4th inning and repeating the feat in the 6th inning. No word on whether he celebrated with a beer afterwards. Strasburg went 6 IP with 8 K and 2 ER (one from Bautista), leaving the game after cutting his finger while trying to clip his fingernail. Toronto pitcher Kyle Drabek left in the 4th inning with an arm injury.
I love how thoroughly dismissive, “that’s a clown question, bro,” is. I also understand that it’s a silly question to ask in the clubhouse, that Harper is a Mormon, a “role model,” and an ambassador for Major League Baseball. He handled the situation perfectly. But you can’t tell me Harper didn’t have a Bull Ice Max forty after the media left the locker room, before joining his teammates at the finest local strip clubs. I’ve been to Canada as a 19 year old and I was poor. You can’t fool me Bryce.
Maybe Cole Hamels should sign whatever extension the Phillies are currently offering? He was cruising right along this season, looking like he was going to earn whatever cash the new Dodgers owners have left over after purchasing the team, but he’s allowed 18 runs over his last 26.2 innings pitched. Wednesday night he went 6 innings, giving up 6 earned, with 6 Ks. The Phillies did hang on to beat the Twins, thanks to Jim Thome’s 445 HR in the 4th inning.
Lance Lynn continued his out of nowhere ace impersonation, striking out 12 White Sox in 7.1 innings and picking up the 1-0 win for the Cardinals. Lynn is now 10-2 on the season with a 2.66 ERA and 8.96 K/9. His 3.49 xFIP suggests potential regression, but because of Matt Cain, I don’t know what to believe anymore. Sell high at your own risk.
Michael Cuddyer did everything he could for the Rockies, going 4-4 with 2 HR, 3 RBI and 3 run, in the 10-8 loss to Oakland. The A’s scored 5 runs from the 6th inning on, after spotting the Rockies an 8-5 lead. Brandon Inge’s 2 run double in the 9th, capped his 3 RBI day and allowed Ryan Cook to come in and grab his second save on the season. Grab Cook if he’s available on your league’s wire.
Link of the day:
Check out Carson Cistulli’s interesting breakdown of Clay Buchholz’s full repertoire in one Giancarlo Stanton at bat from Tuesday night. Buchholz has been on a great run in his last 4 games (31 IP, 4 ER) and as Carson shows, he has the stuff. Buchholz might be available in your league, if an impatient owner dropped him, or could be a nice buy-low candidate with his terrible start still weighing down his ERA.
Matchup of the day:
Fantasy owners looking for a streamer candidate on Thursday should grab Twins’ pitcher Scott Diamond versus the Phillies. Diamond is living up to his name this season, with 1.61 ERA and 2.97 xFIP in 44.2 IP. Diamond is available in 61% of ESPN leagues. The Phillies have a .245 average against lefties versus a .275 average against righties and are on a 2-9 skid.
