The real genius of the quote, is it’s adaptability. Nobody knows anything in Hollywood, nobody knows anything in the financial markets, nobody knows anything about the weather and nobody knows anything about fantasy sports. The news today, that Troy Tulowitzki needs arthroscopic surgery on his left groin and likely faces 8 weeks on the DL, just reinforces Goldman’s sentiment.

In a regular, 10 team 5×5, it’s highly likely that your first pick is a major disappointment. Due to injury or down years, the average top ten has been a collective bust. Here’s the 2012 average top ten from Mockdraftcentral.com:

Matt Kemp
Albert Pujols
Miguel Cabrera
Jose Bautista
Troy Tulowitzki
Justin Verlander
Justin Upton
Jacoby Ellsbury

That’s a pretty miserable list. Braun and Verlander have lived up to the hype, firmly in the top ten in most leagues. Cabrera and Bautista have also performed well, although not quite top ten level. Kemp was mashing until running into hamstring injuries and hitting the DL twice. Tulowitzki and Ellsbury have both had their seasons ruined by prolonged injuries, although Ellsbury is working his way back for a potential second half surge. Pujols, Upton and Gonzalez have all sucked to various degrees. Pujols struggled mightily but has gotten back on track. Upton and Gonzalez are both still sputtering and will require magnificent summers just to get to career norms. Nobody knows anything, indeed. Which just goes to show, in fantasy baseball the most important thing is to stay active, stay informed and stay lucky.

And what better way to stay informed than getting your daily fix of baseball news? With that in mind lets take a look around the league from Wednesday night.

The bats were hot in the desert today, as the Diamondbacks cranked six homers, one an inside the parker to top Seattle, 14-10. Miguel Montero was 3 for 4 with 4 RBI, 3 runs and a HR. Justin Upton hit his 6th HR on the season, on a 2 for 4 day with 3 RBI and 2 R. Ryan Roberts hit the inside the park HR and had 3 RBI. Wanting to be part of the party, Seattle’s Kyle Seager and Franklin Gutierrez also hit a HR each and knocked in 2 and 3 RBIs respectively. It was not a good day to start Trevor Cahill, who picked up the win, but also allowed 6 ER.

It was desert hot in the Bronx on Wednesday, where the Braves and Yankees decided to raise the home-run-binge-bar, with a Yankee Stadium record, 9 HR in the game. The Braves led the way with 5 of the 9 HR and won 10-5. Jason Heyward hit 2 HR, on a 2 for 4 day with 3 RBI. Jeter, A-Rod, Cano and Eric Chavez all hit solo home runs for the Yankees.

The Marlins walked into Florida-esque weather in Fenway and also a buzzsaw Red Sox lineup that socked 4 dingers, in a 15-5 Boston win. David Ortiz’s 18th HR on the season, was a grand slam that broke the game open in the 4th and was followed a few at bats later by Jarrod Saltalamacchia’s 13 HR of the season. Nobody has benefitted more from the stewardship of Bobby Valentine than Salty. If you haven’t already given up on Ricky Nolasco, perhaps his 3.1 IP, 9 ER day will be the final push you need. Also, why the hell haven’t you given up on Ricky Nolasco?

In other parts of the country, the pitchers kept the season status quo and carried the day. Cleveland’s Justin Masterson threw a 3 hit, complete game, shutout with 9 Ks, leading the Indians to a 8-1 victory over the Reds. The Cardinals’ Jake Westbrook, also threw a complete game shutout, with 5 Ks, as St. Louis topped Detroit 3-1. Yu Darvish surrendered a two run single to opposing pitcher Anthony Bass, before settling in and pitching 8 innings, with 8 Ks, leading Texas to the 4-2 win. Stephen Strasburg pitched 7 innings, rung up 10 Rays, allowed 2 ER and picked up the win after giving way to Tyler Clippard, who picked up his 10th save of the season. Oakland’s Tommy Milone, a streamer’s delight, pitched a complete game, with only 1 ER but also only 2 Ks, in the Athletics 4-1 defeat of the Dodgers. The Mets Dillon Gee, took his lead from teammate R.A. Dickey and struck out 9 Orioles in 7.1 IP.

Matchup of the day:

Not a ton of games on the docket for Thursday, but if you’re looking to stream someone, you could try Dice K against the Marlins in Fenway. Matsuzaka hasn’t been great in his two starts after returning from injury, but he’s facing a Marlins lineup that ranks 28th in the league in runs scored and 25th in team wOBA at .299 on the season. Consider it a lack of faith in the Marlins lineup more than anything.

Philly’s John Mayberry Jr. failed to homer in his 4th straight game on Wednesday, but remained hot. Over his last 4 games, Mayberry has 3 HR, 6 RBI, 7 hits and 6 runs. Thursday he faces the Rockies’ Jeff Francis, he of the career 4.84 ERA, 4.41 xFIP and 2012 season 12.46 ERA. Hell, I’d start a one legged Ryan Howard against Francis.
