Weekdays before regular games begin, especially ones without any preseason action, typically brings a lackluster day of news in the NFL, but times are not entirely dull.

The Maurice Jones-Drew saga continues on and only gets uglier. After this weekend it appeared that both Jones-Drew and the Jaguars may be getting closer to making amends, but now it certainly does not seem that way. His presumed back up, Rashad Jennings, who has been extremely impressive in preseason and training camp, has already been named the first week starter.

I think Joness-Drew will eventually come back because of the massive losses hes taking from not showing to camp. Those financial losses are too much to bear, especially if he starts missing preseason time. However, from a fantasy perspective, I can not take him in the first two rounds. I am risk averse, especially that early.  Jennings is gaining too much ground while Jones-Drew continues to lose a ton. If you dare to take Mojo, Jennings is a must have and a reach is probably necessary.

Other quick notes:

Austin Collie, although still day to day, is expected to play week one. This news may not have spread to all owners during this draft heavy time, so I love Collie as a late round flyer. Most owners are still afraid to take the Colts WR, but the latest concussion was not significant enough for him to miss any regular season games. Collie can easily eclipse 70-1000-5 in a Colts offense that is poised to throw the ball a ton.

The New England Patriots extended the contract of tight end Aaron Hernandez. This for one may seal the destiny of Wes Welker, but also speaks volumes to how the Patriots feel about Hernandez. The Pats already spent big on Gronk, but felt they should lock up their other young superstar before he enters free agency. I love Hernandez as the TE 4 in both PPR and non-PPR leagues. He has been the weapon of choice for the Patriots all preseason and seems likely to benefit the most from the defensive schemes opponents will have to institute against New England.

Shanahanigans are in full force in Washington DC. Coach Mike Shanahan is still undecided on a starter after rookie Alfred Morris emerged as a candidate this weekend. The whole situation should be avoided in fantasy unless you are in an extremely deep league or take a flyer in the last couple of rounds. Just don’t do it to yourself.

Terrell Owens was cut. Whatever. Bigger news is the emergence Russell Martin as a starting QB for Seattle. Wilson looks extremely sharp and is a great pick for dynasty and keeper leagues. I would even reach to ensure I get the rookie in those types of leagues.

Doug Martin has appeared to lock up his starting position in Tampa. The Ray Rice look a like is a very tempting acquistion for fantasy owners, especially in Head Coach Greg Schiano’s offense, but I do not know if I am willing to spend the third round, or even fourth round pick to take him. He has not been extremely impressive in preseason and lost guard Davin Joseph for the season. He is a trendy pick, but too expensive for my taste.
