Fantasy Football Week 11: Chargers vs. Broncos Monday Night Football Preview
Nobody really talks about the incredible season being had by Philip Rivers; he is on pace to break Dan Marino's single season yardage record and last week his biggest weapon the immortal Seyi Ajirotutu. The announcers and analysts breathlessly extol the virtues Peyton Manning and what he has accomplished this year with a bunch of injuries, but Manning's had Wayne to throw to every game this year, look at Philip Rivers. Rivers began the season without his top WR (Vincent Jackson), a rookie running back and some "high-potential" guys at the WR position (Malcolm Floyd and Legadu Naannee). Yes, he has the incomparable Antonio Gates, but he is now playing on one foot. Yet every week Rivers churns out fantastic games and breathes new life into the dead (you are welcome Randy McMichael).
I know ESPN and NBC can’t help themselves with the Manning love, but every week Rivers turns nobodies into fantasy darlings and that is why he is the top fantasy QB this year and deserves all the accolades being lobbed toward Manning (who lost the game for his team last night with an atrocious throw and interception).
The truly amazing thing, a November game between Rivers and Kyle Orton features the top two fantasy QB's. Orton was surprisingly solid last year, and he's only improved upon it this year. Brandon Lloyd, after multiple disappointing stops, is now a top flight wide receiver. With these two passing attacks, this looks like a complete shoot out… not so fast. The Chargers are top-3 in fewest points allowed to opposing QB's and WR's and they always play better as the season moves along. Neither team has much of a running game, in fact, the Broncos are dead last (a bit deceiving as Knowshon has been banged up for most of the season).
That being said the only teams to shut down the Broncos passing game were the Jets and the Raiders (a wacky game that has to be discounted) and the Chargers aren't as good as the Jets. Maybe Orton doesn't have an all-time game, but 250 yards and a couple TD's seems to be a certainty.
I think this game will feature a lot of excitement and scoring. I know it might be difficult to tune into a game featuring two mediocre teams, but tune in tonight for no other reason than to watch Rivers turn another fantasy nobody into this week's must have waiver add.
