Welcome to Week 12’s Minor League Buzz. Some quick updates on some of the bigger names in the Minor Leagues: Dylan Bundy, Billy Hamilton, Trevor Bauer and Anthony Rizzo.

Dylan Bundy had what he called his “best outing in Hi-A” on Saturday, going five strong frames while surrendering two hits, two walks and striking out two. Bundy moved to 3-2 since being promoted to the Advanced-A Frederick Keys and has a 3.42 ERA with a 3.1 K/BB to show for it.

Some may view the transition to Hi-A as a serious adjustment considering the youngster dished eight games (30 IP) at Class A Delmarva giving up a total of five hits and zero earned runs. However, the adjustments Bundy is making, such as effectively mixing in his secondary pitches and pounding the ball low in the zone, are all part of the learning process for the 19 year-old. He is truly one of the most exciting young arms in the game and the Orioles are treating his development as such. Bundy entered the season rated as a top 10 prospect by MLB.com, Baseball America and Baseball Prospectus.

It’s no secret that Billy Hamilton is my favorite prospect in the Minor Leagues. I usually have a tweet or two a day about his unfair speed or his ability to change the game. Many fantasy baseball owners ask about his potential call-up date and/or when he will become relevant in standard fantasy leagues. However, those are questions most in the “industry” don’t have an exact answer to.

With his four stolen bases last evening in a 15-10 victory of the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes, Hamilton increased his total to 87 on the year. Yes, 87 (!). Please don’t consider the speedster one dimensional either, he’s currently triple slashing .332/.423/.450 with 23 extra-base hits, 27 runs batted in and has scored 64 times. Incredible.

After being named the MVP of the California-Carolina League All-Star Game, many were surprised to see Hamilton return to Hi-A Bakersfield and not Double-A Pensacola. The speedster still “has some things to work on defensively” according to a scout. Considering Pensacola’s current short stop, Didi Gregorious (another Reds top ten prospect according to Baseball America) is having himself a fine season, that same scout suggested a position change may be looming for Hamilton. While that was simply speculation, it makes the most sense as it seems the middle infield for Cincinnati will likely be manned by Zack Cozart and Brandon Phillips for the next few years.

As we wait for the Reds to determine which direction to go with Billy Hamilton, all we can do is sit back, read the box scores (and my tweets) and hope that one of the most exciting baseball players on the planet will be arriving in the big leagues within the next 18 months.

Some thought Trevor Bauer may have caught a break this weekend at the unfortunate cost of a Joe Saunders injury. However, when the Diamondbacks placed Saunders on the disabled list with a strained left shoulder, they recalled right-handed pitcher Jonathan Albaladejo from Triple-A Reno instead. Bauer, who was also a consensus Top-15 prospect amongst the aforementioned scouting outlets, doesn’t have much left to prove in the minor leagues. In Double-A, Bauer took eight trips to the rubber, went 7-1 and strutted a 11.17 K/9 with a 1.68 ERA (2.72 FIP). Since the promotion to Triple-A Reno, Bauer is 4-0 in seven starts with a 10.93 K/9 and a 2.79 ERA (3.44 FIP).

The major concern for the young righty is the amount of walks he gives up. In Double-A, Bauer gave up 4.84 BB/9 and has slightly improved to 4.29 walks per nine since arriving in Triple-A Reno. While Bauer flaunts a deep arsenal of offerings that appear to be major league ready, some suggest his questionable control could be a liability at the next level. If the Diamondbacks decide to use Patrick Corbin or Josh Collmenter in Joe Saunders’ spot in the rotation, look for Bauer to be summoned around the All-Star Break.

EDIT: The Diamondbacks have indeed decided to call-up Trevor Bauer to make his MLB debut this coming Thursday.

Anthony Rizzo has now spent enough time at Triple-A Iowa to ensure he will be under the Cubs’ control for an extra year. Although Rizzo is likely to join the big league club any day now, he won’t be meeting them in Arizona. Look for Rizzo to get the call during the Cubs’ next home stand, but if he’s still available on your league’s waiver wire, you best grab him now.

Through 68 games in Triple-A, Rizzo has triple slashed .349/.410/.710, led the Pacific Coast League with 23 homers, smacked 18 doubles and knocked in 62 runs.
