Pablo Sandoval And Ryan Zimmerman Hit The DL: Top Hot Corner Fantasy Baseball Replacements

Pablo Sandoval, hurt.  Evan Longoria, still hurt.  Ryan Zimmerman, hurt longer.   You, the fantasy owner, hurting without them.  Mercifully, Longoria is set to return on Tuesday, but Panda is out 4-6 weeks with a broken hamate bone, while Zimmerman is having surgery to fix a hernia that will keep him out 3-4 weeks longer than originally expected.  Needless to say, it has been a rough year for the third base position, a position that was not all that strong to begin with.

So who do you plug the hole with?

If you are lucky, someone in your league has given up on a guy who is off to a slow start that was drafted in almost all leagues.  For example, Pedro Alvarez (79.5% ESPN), Mark Reynolds (74.2%), or Chone Figgins (68.2%) might be available.

Of those three, I definitely prefer Figgins.  He is only hitting .204 so far, but he has a super-low BABIP of .216 and a good line drive rate well over 20%.  If he keeps hitting ‘em hard, he will start to see some fall in.  But if you are looking for power, Reynolds is the choice because Alvarez is striking out a ton (34.5%), not drawing walks (6.4%), and not hitting balls hard (10.7% LD%).

If you are not lucky enough to be in a league where one of those guys is available, Juan Uribe (30.8%) is a guy that I have always liked.  He started out slow and has recently missed a few games with some minor injuries, but he 13 for his last 29 with 3 homers and 11 RBI.  And Edwin Encarnacion (33.0%) might be another option if you need power.  He has yet to hit one out this year, but he hit 21 out in a little over 300 AB last year, so I would imagine a few will start flying out for him soon.  If power is not your category of need, I still believe in Omar Infante (46.7%).  Over his last 1,000 AB, Infante has been a .308 hitter, so when his BABIP (.242) turns around, he should be just fine.  I would rather have any of Uribe, Encarnacion, and Infante over Alvarez at this point.

After that, the picking’s get slim(mer).  If speed is your need, Mike Aviles (35.4%) is one of only two third basemen with more than three steals on the year, but he does not do much else.  A lot of people like Wilson Betemit (28.8%), but I am going to pass on the guy with a .449 BABIP who strikes out 30% of the time and does not play every day.  Alberto Callaspo (34.9%) is about as underwhelming as they come, but at the very least he will not kill your average.  And preseason favorite of many, Sean Rodriguez (35.2%), sucks.  Do not let anyone talk you into him as your 3B replacement.

For those of you in NL-only leagues, I almost do not even know what to tell you.  Unfortunately, potential replacement Casey Blake (6.8%) is on the DL, but make sure you keep an eye on his progress.  His replacement, Aaron Miles, does not have 3B eligibility (not that you would use him anyway), so you are going to have to take a shot on Chris Johnson (0.4%) or, God help us all, Brandon Wood (0.1%).

Actually, you would probably be better off with Jeff Baker (1.6%) or Miguel Cairo (0.1%) getting limited playing time.  Hell, you might be better off just leaving the slot empty (0.0%)rather than going with Brandon Wood.
