Shane Victorino traded to the Dodgers & Dominic Brown gets the call

News broke earlier this morning that Dominic Brown was getting the call up to the big leagues from AAA. Many speculated the move showed the sign that Shane Victorino was being shipped out, and he has done just that. Victorino will be packing his bags this morning and heading to the west coast to join the Dodgers. The Dodgers who earlier last week acquired Hanley Ramirez in what many believe a king’s ransom have now added another solid bat with very nice speed to anchor the front of their lineup.
Victorino who has been dealt to the Dodgers for relief pitcher Josh Lindblom and SP prospect Ethan Martin is having one of his statistically worse years with only a 1.5 OWAR, which hasn’t been this low since 2006. Shane has driven in 40, hit 9 homers, and scored 46 times thus far, but is on pace to surpass his career stolen base record of 37 set in 2007. Victorino will most likely be fit into the front of the Dodger line up, designed to get on base and advance with his wheels so that sluggers Hanley Ramirez, Matt Kemp and Andre Ethier can drive him home.
For Dom Brown, this is his third stint to the majors and neither of the first two was very promising. In 280 career plate appearances, Brown has only hit .236 with 7 home runs and 32 runs batted in – not what most people care to see as a top rated prospect. Brown has never been the guy to smash the long ball, but has always done well to get on base with a career .373 minor league on base percentage. Brown should offer some nice value to the Phillies line up as they look to turn the page on this very disappointing 2012 season.
Lindblom has shown some decent numbers so far in his two year Major League career posting a 2.91 career ERA with 71 strike outs in 77.1 innings pitched. His WHIP is under 1.20 but has the tendency of giving up the long ball on occasion giving up 9 in just 47.2 innings this year. Lindblom was used sporadically as a starter in the minors but hasn’t started a game since 2010 in AAA where he didn’t fair very well. Ethan Martin who was a first round pick by the Dodgers in 2008 has shown some promise so far this year going 8 – 6 with a 3.58 ERA. He has started all 20 games he has pitched in, and has lasted about 6 innings per start over that course. His 112 strike outs gives him 8.5 K/9 which will be needed in the band box that is Citizens Bank Park.
