Weather Concerns: Today is going to be a beautiful day for baseball across the nation! There are chances of thunderstorms in Texas and Colorado, but neither is threatening enough to disregard players in those games.
Starting Pitchers
On a day that does not feature a lot of top arms, Jesse Chavez is the guy to target on DraftStreet. Chavez sports a mid-tier salary and gets a juicy matchup with the Houston Astros. Chavez has been exceptional in his first three starts, striking out over one hitter per inning and only allowing three earned runs in 20 innings on the bump. The Astros’ are leading the league in strikeout percentage (25.6%) and make for a very nice target for Chavez today.
Yordano Ventura also has an intriguing matchup today. Ventura has a flamethrower for an arm and has flashed it around in his first two starts this year. As a product of his high-octane stuff, he has plenty of strikeout potential every time he gets the ball. Today against the Minnesota Twins, I fully expect him to post a solid line and produce great value for his price.
Although I hate recommending pitchers against my Cubs, Homer Bailey is another solid mid-priced option today. The Cubs are a lackluster offense and have struggled against Bailey in the past. Bailey posted two wins against the Cubs last year, and despite a terrible start to the year, I look for him to bounce back today.
Note: On a day of games that doesn’t feature a lot of stud arms, I feel it’s best to roster three of these middle-priced starters in your lineups at DraftStreet. Other pitchers to consider: Stephen Strasburg, Gerrit Cole, Robbie Ross and David Hale.
Catchers
Note: Most teams are playing day games after night games today. Be sure that the catcher you decide to use is in the lineup. Sunday is a perfect time for managers to rest their starters, don’t let it be your guy.
Buster Posey is always a viable option in daily fantasy. However, he becomes an even better play against left-handed pitching. Posey will get his at-bats today against Robbie Erlin, a left-handed pitcher for the San Diego Padres. Despite a hitless game last night, Posey should be one of your top catching options today, especially given his career .340 average against lefties.
Thanks to the watered down player pool at the catcher position, Yasmani Grandal makes his way into my catcher plays today. I don’t like to target a lot of players at Petco Park, but both of the catcher options there today are too good to pass up. Grandal has been swinging the bat extremely well since recovering from injury and gets to face Tim Lincecum. Grandal has homered off of Lincecum in the past and is incredible value given his price.
Consider: Wilin Rosario and Carlos Ruiz.
First Baseman
Prince is in the building. Prince Fielder hit another moonshot homerun last night and has finally gotten that Rangers offense going in Arlington. He already has two career homeruns in only six at-bats against Erik Johnson and sets himself up nicely for a third today. He is still hitting below the Mendoza Line, but has picked up his play in recent games. He is a pinnacle in this offense and as it gets going, so will he. Play him with confidence.
Justin Morneau is another solid option as he homered at Coors Field last night. Morneau has had a nice surge in the beginning of the year hitting behind Carlos Gonzalez and Troy Tulowitzki and I expect that to continue today. This game is expected to be the highest scoring of all the games today and seemingly everyone is in play. While Roberto Hernandez, formerly Fausto Carmona, has been decent this year, he hasn’t seen Coors Field yet. Morneau and company should be good for plenty of production today.
Consider: Eric Hosmer, Garret Jones and Chris Davis.
Second Baseman
Second base, much like catcher is a position that is typically difficult to fill offensively. Today I’m banking on some of the studs. Chase Utley has been scorching baseballs all over the field to begin the season. In Coors Field today against a right-handed pitcher, I see no reason not to put him in your lineup. The Phillies have been atrocious offensively the first two games of this series, however, I expect them to adjust to the altitude today and put some crooked numbers on the board.
Jason Kipnis is another familiar name to my daily fantasy lineups. Kipnis is perhaps an underappreciated second baseman that brings a boatload of potential to your lineup every night. Kipnis and the rest of the Cleveland Indians thrive against right-handed pitching and I expect them to today. Kipnis not only brings homerun upside, but the potential to steal a base as he stole 30 from opposing pitchers and catchers last year.
Consider: Neil Walker, Derek Dietrich and DJ Lemahieu.
Third Baseman
Third base is potentially the easiest position to fill for me today. Evan Longoria is no-brainer on DraftStreet today. Underpriced because of his beginning of the season, Longo has recently started to swing the bat better. I don’t predict any type of hangover from last night’s Rays explosion headed into today’s matchup with Vidal Nuno. Longoria mashes left-handed pitching and he and his right-handed teammates make for excellent plays in what could be a very heavily targeted daily fantasy game.
Carlos Santana and Pedro Alvarez are another two great options at third base today, but I can’t seem to budge off of Evan Longoria. Both Santana and Alvarez have homerun potential against right-handed pitching today and make for solid plays in your lineup.
Consider: Cody Asche, Nolan Arenado and Mike Moustakas.
Shortstop
The obvious shortstop plays today are Troy Tulowitzki and Jimmy Rollins. Both players get to face off in what is expected to be the highest scoring game of the day at Coors Field. Coors Field simply does not need much analysis. Plug these guys in your lineup and sit back and watch the runs pile up. There hasn’t been as much scoring from this series as was expected, but I think that changes today. You’re going to have to pay up to use them, but do so with confidence.
Derek Jeter is another one of my favorite shortstop plays today. Jeter doesn’t carry the glamour or price of Troy Tulowitzki or Jimmy Rollins, but he does have an excellent matchup. “The Captain” gets to see left-hander Cesar Ramos as the Yankees finish up their series in Tampa today. Jeter has been dealing with a leg injury, so make sure he is in the lineup first, if he is, feel free to plug him in.
Consider: Hanley Ramirez and Brad Miller.
Outfield
The outfield produces so much value each and every day. Today is no different. Three names from three different teams really stick out to me today. Giancarlo Stanton, Carlos Gonzalez and Wil Myers are my favorite three outfield options today. Giancarlo gets a tasty matchup with Brandon Maurer, a pitcher who was in the top fifteen in the league in homeruns allowed last year, giving up 1.60HR/9. Giancarlo has been on fire recently and I don’t see him slowing down today.
CarGo, as he’s affectionately known, faces a weak right-handed pitcher in Roberto Hernandez and gets the benefit of playing at home in Coors Field. Despite always being a viable option, CarGo jumps off the page when you pair weak righty and Coors Field.
Wil Myers was a monster last night. One of the very few who doesn’t wear any batting gloves, Myers blasted two balls out of Tropicana Field in a romping of the Yankees last night. The Rays right-handed bats are all exceptional plays today against the lefty Vidal Nuno, but I especially like Myers. Myers has six hits in his last two games and I think he adds a couple more to that today.
Consider: Christian Yelich, Alex Gordon, Adam Jones, Alfonso Soriano and Jason Heyward.
