Weather

The East coast is in one of those “Mother Nature” ruts again and skies don’t ever seem to turn from the bleak gray that is painted early in the morning. A bunch of weather games today to keep your eye on: Pittsburgh, Washington, Minnesota and St. Louis.

Positional Breakdown

Starting Pitchers

It’s a shortened, split slate as it normally is on Thursday, as we’ve grown accustomed too, there aren’t many top notch starting pitchers to choose from today, especially given weather concerns. The safest play in terms of potential and weather has to be Scott Kazmir. Kazmir is pitching like a horse, potentially living up to his name as a once heralded top prospect now truly honing his skills as a 30 year old lefty. He’s been dominant lately and pitches tonight at home against the up and down Boston Red Sox. The Red Sox honestly don’t frighten me too much, and I feel like you have to have your eye on Kazmir in a lot of spots tonight. His price is right just about everywhere and he brings a ton of strikeout potential to the table. Don’t shy away because it’s the Red Sox.

If you’re looking for perhaps another underrated stud this year, Jordan Zimmerman is your guy. Zimmerman has been money in the bank recently and gets to pitch against a strikeout happy Atlanta Braves team at home tonight. The issue here becomes the weather and “whether” you wish to tempt fate and roll the dice with Invader Zim. If things clear up, I see no reason not to roster him.

Also take note of Shelby Miller pitching at home against the aging, horrendous, Philadelphia Phillies. Jimmy Rollins’ recently broke the club hits record, but he probably won’t get too many more before his career is over. I like Miller today as a guy that might slip between the fingers of a lot of DFS guys, he could make a big difference.

Catcher

It’s perhaps unfair to just jump on the Brian McCann bandwagon, but I’m going to do so. McCann was awesome last night against a southpaw and tonight faces young right-hander Drew Hutchison back home at Yankee Stadium. We all expected McCann to really break out with a super hitter friendly park, and conference, but he’s been slow to get things going this year. Last night hopefully propels him out of that and on to better things. The best part about McCann is his all-star ability, and his bench playing salary, you can make up a lot of ground with this guy.

First Baseman

Matt Adams put on his big boy pants in the last week. While the Cardinals have been an enigma offensively all season, the lack of power from the big guy really made him a no-play in DFS until the last week where he clobbered three homeruns. It’s definitely good to see him get his swing going and today he gets to face right-hander David Buchanan, who well, is awful. Buchanan has been atrocious and won’t be any better today; use Adams accordingly.

Second Baseman

Another guy who seems to be flexing his bicep just a tad bit more in the past week is Robinson Cano. Now, Cano’s power numbers were surely going to take a dip going from Yankee Stadium to Safeco Field, but I’m not sure we only expected four homeruns by nearly the end of June. He’s still swinging the bat really well, so without the homeruns you’ll be ok, but I like his chances of maybe running a  ball out tonight against Jesse Hahn. Petco Park doesn’t serve hitters any better, but it’s Robby Cano we’re talking about.

Third Baseman

Save Me Juan Francisco. Francisco disappeared just a little bit when Brett Lawrie came back and the Blue Jays came back down to Earth, but he’s still hanging around, and he’s still hitting right-handed guys with authority. Francisco gets a sweeeeeeeet matchup with David Phelps tonight at Yankee Stadium and is a really likely homerun candidate. His price has fallen, his potential has not; use this guy if you want a cheap homerun. Afterwards, tweet all sorts of things about Train and use #SaveMeJuanFrancisco.

Shortstop

Yeah, I’m going to go ahead and pick on David Phelps again. I just don’t think David Phelps is any good, and I actually like Blue Jays hitters, that’s why Jose Reyes will find himself here (congrats Jose). Reyes gets to start everything off tonight against Phelps and should have success doing so. We’ve mentioned before the upside that a guy like Reyes has not only on the bases, but with some pop in the stick. Plus, factor in the return to New York (not the same club, but still) the short porch in right, yadda-yadda, bingo-bango, points. There just aren’t a lot of options tonight, I like Reyes.

Outfield

I can’t pick just one, just because I like two guys, a lot. Brandon Moss is very powerful and he likes to hit homeruns against right-handed pitchers and Jake Peavy is no longer the guy that has his name on the Cy Young ballot every single year. Moss and the rest of the A’s have a ton of fun messing with the opposition, using every potential platoon advantage and doing so well. He’s got 17 homeruns this season and I wouldn’t be surprised if he adds to that total tonight.

If you don’t like Moss because he’s weird or smells bad, maybe you should try and pick a different player. I’ll tell you that player should be, Colby Rasmus. Now, Rasmus just got back, so he might take some time to get into the “swing” of things (hah), but he gets such a juicy matchup with David Phelps. He’s more of a GPP play thanks to his homerun potential, and lack of production in other facets of the game, but he’s a solid play and the price is right.
