NBA Fantasy Basketball: Brandon Roy & Other Early Injuries Impacting Key Names

The 2010-2011 NBA season may still be in its infancy stage, but that hasn’t kept a rash of injuries from wreaking havoc on many of the league’s premier names. From coast to coast some of the game’s top players have set aside their uniforms in exchange for street clothes and their absence is sure to impact the complexion of the young season.

Portland Trail Blazers’ star guard Brandon Roy has yet to play a full season since entering the league in 2006 and a lingering knee injury doesn’t give hope that he will ever fulfill a full 82 game schedule. Roy left Saturday’s game against New Orleans after playing just over 20 minutes and is questionable for the remainder of the week.

Expect young Wesley Matthews to fill in the interim alongside Andre Miller. The Trailblazers like Matthews’s length on the perimeter and his streaky scoring ability which has produced four games of 13 points or more off of Portland’s bench. Once Roy returns it wouldn’t be unreasonable for Portland to give him ample time to recover and thus delegating more minutes to Matthews.

About 600 miles down California’s interstate 5 we see a similar situation for the Golden State Warriors whose star forward David Lee has missed the past week due to an elbow laceration. Lee suffered the injury after connecting with New York’s Wilson Chandler who lost two teeth in the incident but Lee is expected to make his return this weekend.

Unlike Brandon Roy’s recurring injury, Lee shouldn’t feel any affects of the injured elbow as the season progresses so expect him to return back to his double-double form as the Warriors chase a coveted playoff seed in the highly competitive Western Conference.

As if the loss of Lebron James wasn’t enough to crush the hopes of Cleveland Cavaliers fans, the groin injury suffered by star-by-default Mo Williams has shelved the guard once again. This same groin injury sidelined Williams for most of the pre-season so the Cavs may need to look for alternative options since there is no timetable for his return. This should open opportunities for players like Ramon Sessions who’s seeing steady floor time at 26 MPG and Daniel Gibson who’s outside shooting has opened the floor for Cleveland’s post players.

In competition with the Cavaliers in the NBA’s central division is the Chicago Bulls whose offense hasn’t skipped a beat since their newest star Carlos Boozer broke his hand before the start of the season. The Bulls currently rank fifth in team scoring and Joakim Noah seems to have assumed the role of capable scorer and elite rebounder. Where does Carlos Boozer fit into the equation upon his December return? Boozer has long been one of the better face-up shooting big men in the league so don’t expect him to struggle to find his points even after the recovery from a broken hand.

In the nation’s capital the NBA’s newest star John Wall has cemented himself as one of the league’s best dressed players. Not an accolade Wall wants to be known for. Instead the Wizards rookie belongs back on the floor as he continues to salvage what is otherwise the league’s worst team.

Wall suffered a sprained ankle last week and will be wearing a boot for the remainder of the week. Early reports aren’t positive but the Wizards seem optimistic even after Wall’s statements this weekend. “As much as I put pressure on it, it got worse and worse.”

The injury doesn’t seem to be related to the groin strain he suffered during rookie camp in July which gives hope that upon the rookie’s return he will return to his impressive 18.1 PPG, 9.8 ASG, and league leading 3.3 SPG.

Even after implementing a strict minutes limit, Houston Rockets’ Yao Ming has still found a way to land himself on the league’s injured list. The good news is that the injury isn’t related to the right foot that has disabled the 7’7’’ center the past several seasons. Instead a strained tendon in his left leg will sideline him until at least Friday.

It seemed the Rockets’ brass couldn’t be any more cautious with Yao but expect him to be under even closer watch following this most recent injury scare. Previous to being hurt he was one of the most efficient big men in the league totaling over 10PPG, 5.5RPG, and 1.6 BPG in limited action.
