The Daily Fix: Ben Zobrist Eats the Twins for Breakfast & Other Fantasy Baseball News

Picture

Ben Zobrist and the Rays danced all over the Twins in a double header Thursday. The Rays outscored the Twins 21-4 with Zobrist batting in 10 himself with a home run in each of the games. After a slow start to the season, yesterday’s performance propelled him to the top of the RBI board. In the past 5 games Ben has 4 home runs, 18 RBI, 8 R and 2 SB, while bumping up his average from .187 to .258. Nothing like a kick in the pants to impatient owners who dropped him last week.

Nationals prospect Bryce Harper, was responsible for a clearing of the benches Tuesday, CBS Eye of Baseball reported. After smacking a monster home run off Tyler Waldron in the first inning, he struck out looking in his next at bat and for unknown reasons got into a shouting match with the young pitcher. Sure gets the blood boiling. I want to see this kid in the Bigs now!

As you all remember, Ubaldo Jimenez's start to the season in 2010 was one for the ages. He won his first 6 games, then lost to the Dodgers (even though he only gave 2 hits and 1 run) and then won 7 straight more. Jered Weaver is having a similar start to Ubaldo's run, so for those wondering who had the better start through 6, the answer is… well debatable.

2010 JIMENEZ: 41.1 IP, 26 H, 4 ER, 16 BB, 44 K, 0.88 ERA, 1.02 WHIP
2011 WEAVER: 45.1, 26 H, 5 ER, 10 BB, 49 K, 0.99 ERA, 0.79 WHIP

Like clockwork, whenever a pitcher loses his job, a day or two later it comes out that their arm or hand was bothering them. Enter Jonathan Broxton who says he has soreness in his elbow, but nothing serious. Well I guess it was serious enough for you to pitch like crap and lose your job.

Alex Gordon lost his 19-game hit streak Wednesday, the highest of his career and highest in the AL this year thus far.

This date in baseball, 1913: Showing how much times have changed, the Reds forgot to pack their uniforms and were forced to borrow White Sox uniforms while playing the Cubs.

Lance Berkman’s 467 foot home run was the 2nd farthest of the season yesterday according to Hittrackeronline.com. Justin Upton still owns the farthest this year at 478 feet. Big Lance hit 2 dingers yesterday giving him 8 on the season, only trailing Ryan Braun’s 9.

Michael Pineda seems to be eyeing his teammate Felix Hernandez’s Cy Young Award. Did anyone tell him he’s a rookie? Pineda improved to 4-1 yesterday over the Tigers. Pineda ran into a little trouble in the 2nd inning, giving up 3 of his 5 hits and the only 2 runs scored. He struck out his season high 9, giving him a total of 30 for the year. Let’s compare Pineda to the King thus far:

2010 PINEDA: 31.1 IP, 22 H, 7 ER, 12 BB, 30 K, 2.01 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, .198 BAA
2011 HERNANDEZ: 40.2, 37 H, 15 ER, 12 BB, 35 K, 3.32 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, .243 BAA

Pitching duels I will be watching today: Chris Carpenter @Tim Hudson, CJ Wilson @Trevor Cahill, Tim Lincecum @Jason Marquis, Ricky Romero @Freddy Garcia
