You forgot about Corey Kluber. He’s definitely at least on the back end off this list. He’s been far more impressive than Danks.

Kluber just missed the cut. He’s another guy I’m not buying that i differ significantly with the other SP guru here, Brett Talley.. We have had numerous discussions about him and im just not buying it. Once again, it’s because of the walks and the fact that his fastball is just too straight. Danks doesn’t walk guys, so once again you see my low-walk fetish shining through 😉

First off, I want to say I respect you for standing up to your rankings and actually discussing your reasons why you ranked what you did. It seems a lot of guys make rankings like this and then duck away from any critiques so props to you. I respect your opinion on Kluber but his walk rate is very low, even if it’s not Danks low. And when you throw in his strikeout rate comparatively, I personally think Kluber comes out ahead. Time will tell though.

I’m curious what you like in Doubront vs Kluber. Kluber has a better strikeout rate and half as many walks. Half! Doesn’t Felix drive your walk fetish crazy? Haha

I’m curious why you ranked Gio at 49. Over the last 30 days, he has 5 QS, a 2.12 ERA, a 1.06 WHIP, and an 8.49 K/9, placing him in the top 10 among SPs during that time. He’s also coming off an 18 win, 22 QS, 2.89 ERA 1.13 WHIP, 9.36 K/9 2012 season. Is there something outside of his recent performance that you are basing your ranking on?

I agree. Gonzalez has a 3.03 so how is Dickey ranked higher? Gonzalez shouldn’t be anywhere close to as low as Josh Johnson or Felix Doubront.

Thanks guys for the comments. My problem with Gio Gonzalez is that i think a big second half blowup is coming. I just really don’t buy him at all for this current level of success. I think you are all correct that i was too low on him, but im trying to make a statement. His walk rate is just way too high. Perhaps i will do a more in depth study of Gonzalez’s season so far. I have a large bias against guys who walk a lot of people, and Gonzalez does that. Any other concerns/questions about where i ranked guys? -Josh

You are right that Gio walks more guys than you would like to see but take a look at his past 3 full seasons. His walk rate this season is lower than 2 of the 3 past seasons, during which he posted very solid ERAs. It appears that because of his high strikeout rate, he can still excell despite his walks. It might not always be pretty but I think he’s proven walks aren’t an issue as of now.
