2011 Fantasy Baseball Daily Fix: Rafael Furcal Breaks Finger, Ponders Retirement?

The Boston Red Sox have now sold out 635 consecutive home games. There hasn’t been an unsold seat in Fenway Park since the 2002 season.

Yes, baseball is a marathon. However, fantasy baseball owners may be getting frustrated with their first and second round picks currently below the Mendoza Line: Albert Pujols (.143), Carl Crawford (.132), Mark Teixeira (.182) and Kevin Youkilis (.148).

Thanks to Starlin Castro (1), the Chicago Cubs are no longer the only MLB team without a stolen base.

Vernon Wells is now 4/44 on the season, batting a horrid .091 for the Angels. I thought change was good?

Rafael Furcal suffered a broken thumb sliding into third base in the fifth inning of the Dodgers 6-1 win in San Francisco. Dylan Hernandez, the Dodgers beat reporter for the LA Times tweets: “(Rafael) Furcal has a broken finger. He’s pondering retirement.”

With the news of Furcal’s injury, and his impending trip to the DL, you may want to check on the availability of these short stops in your league: Willie Bloomquist (Like I told you last week), Asdrubal Cabrera, Maicer Izturis, Orlando Cabrera and Jhonny Peralta.

Old News: Clayton Kershaw is filthy. Last night in ‘Frisco, the southpaw went six and two-thirds, allowing no earned runs on six hits and two walks, while striking out seven. With the win versus the GIants, Kershaw is now 2-1 in 2011.

Alexi Ogando of the Rangers out dueled Justin Verlander in Detroit to improve to 2-0 on the young season. Ogando threw seven shutout innings, surrendered two hits, walked one and struck out four. Alexi is owned in just 27% of Y! leagues.

Through Sunday 4/10, the Texas Rangers lead the MLB in team ERA (2.48).

Two “Young Guns”, Trevor Cahill (5-years/$30.5M) and Clay Buchholz (4-years/$30M) have been locked up long term by their respective teams this week.

Carlos Marmol (4), Francisco Cordero (2), Huston Street (5), Neftali Feliz (4) and Brian Fuentes (4) each earned saves yesterday.

Pitching duels I will be watching Tuesday: Edwin Jackson (CWS) vs. Trevor Cahill (OAK) and Jon Lester (BOS) vs. David Price (TB).
