2011 Fantasy Baseball – The Rookie Report: Everyone Needs Some Angels

Picture

Feeling a little “angelic” this week as my report includes the status of four Los Angeles rookies doing their thing at the major league level. Early season injuries to regulars Kendry Morales, Joel Pineiro, Fernando Rodney and Scott Kazmir have thrust some not so household names into the lime light out in southern California.

SP-TYLER CHATWOOD (ANGELS) – Tyler has basically been filling a void for the injury riddled Angel's pitching staff. The question is now where does he fit in after last weekend's return of  Joel Pineiro and the near return of Scott Kazmir? The 21-year old has a 2-1 record with a 4.94 ERA. What is troubling is that he has walked 17 batters while striking out only 13 in 27 innings. I like his stuff and he is young so I recommend watching the Angel's pitching situation closely in the next two weeks to see what happens with him.

RP-JORDAN WALDEN (ANGELS) – Walden appears to be settling into the closer role while Fernando Rodney remains the set up man. Walden sports a 0.68 ERA with five saves and a 0.90 WHIP. As long as he remains solid he should continue to see most of the Angel's save chances.

RP-MARCO ESTRADA (BREWERS) – Estrada has been lights out in the few innings he has pitched. He has 18 strikeouts in 21 innings. He has only allowed 15 hits and carries a 3.00 ERA. Marco has filled the void for Zack Greinke who is scheduled to make his season debut tomorrow against Atlanta. Estrada’s future will probably have him in a spot starter role providing Greinke is able to stay healthy. He is very capable of producing some good numbers when called for duty. Keep a keen eye on the Brew Crew pitching situation.

RP-VINNIE PESTANO (INDIANS) – Pestano has been a beast in the Indian bullpen with 13 K in only 11 innings pitched. He also has a 0.80 WHIP. Vinnie is a situational reliever at this time but who knows where he will land down the road on the staff with these type numbers. He is fantasy irrelevent at this time unless a change in the Indians bullpen arises due to injuries.

C-HANK CONGER (ANGELS) – The 23-year old Conger continues to see the majority of playing time although he is spelled occasionally by Jeff Mathis and Bobby Wilson. Hank owns a .271 BA with three HR and 10 RBI. I like his upside to eventually become the everyday catcher. Watch his progress before jumping on him though.

1B-MARK TRUMBO (ANGELS) – Trumbo who had been starting, had been placed on the pine four times in the last week as the Angels have began to use Howie Kendrick at first base. Trumbo currently has a .250/4/13 line with two SB. CBS reported yesterday that Mark was seen taking fly balls in the outfield in Boston last night before the Angels opener with the Red Sox. Trumbo has been inconsistent lately at the dish, but still provides some power to help your team. He is valuable only in American League fantasy leagues at this time.

OF-CASPER WELLS (TIGERS) – Wells has taken advantage of his little playing time as starter Magglio Ordonez continues to slump for Detroit. Ordonez is 37-years old, making $10,000,000 and hitting .151. In the five games he has started he owns a hit in four of them. He owns a .242 BA with a home run and 3 RBI. Given some playing time the Michigan native could flourish as the everyday right fielder. The writing is on the wall for the rookie Wells to take over soon.

2011 HARPER WATCH
BRYCE HARPER (HAGERSTOWN A) – Harper had a great week last week hitting .500 going 12 for 24 with 3 home runs and six RBI. For the season Bryce now has a .355 BA with six home runs in only 76 AB. Wow this kid can play!
